Union leaders are often aspiring politicians. Richard Trumka would be an example of this.
So, they instruct the union members how to vote, which is always whichever way will benefit the leaders the most.
Union members are often to dumb to think for themselves.... ""As long as the union keeps me working, I'll do as I'm told"" (so much for independent thought).
This thought process or lack there of usually bites them in the ass. As an example the UMWA backed both Obama and Clinton.... 2 candidates that openly hated the coal industry and Obama won twice...Go figure.

That's why union membership keeps declining. The unionized companies keep getting smaller because they're not competently managed. Union-free companies get bigger.

In fairness it's not all their fault. Unions operate under laws like Soviet dictatorships. Workers in most cases are not allowed to quit the union. Their dues are extracted without their consent from their paychecks by the employer. Union contracts are between the employer and the union. Workers don't count. Like other parasites, unions are almost impossible to get rid of once you've got 'em.
