A GP100 is going to be pretty hard to beat for a durable and reliable revolver.

Of the guns in current production, I would go with the Ruger GP100 followed by a Smith & Wesson 686.

For pure strength the Ruger Redhawk and the FA-83 are the strongest nothing else is equal

The Smith 27/28 isn't even close to a 6 shot Redhawk for cylinder wall thickness.
The Colt New Service is right there as well, though it's kind of an afterthought. +1

Thanks for the input, I've been eyeing the Ruger GP100 as the most likely candidate, but always interested in what others here think.
I already have a Redhawk and a Bisley in 45 Colt and not much more robust than those two for sure ( yeah, the FA M83 is like a bank vault, Ed!), but consider them filling more of a specialty niche for me, I should have been more specific. I'm thinking along the lines of DA EDC for both town and country/back country where the reliability in adverse conditions would be most important, at least as far as revolvers can realistically be counted on. But also for self defense training because I don't have a lot of time with a revolver and want to learn if for no other reason than just because (channeling Bill Jordon?). I also have a bunch of 357 brass and bullets that need to get shot for trigger time and avoid burning up the 9mm supply.
Ruger SP101... Should fit the bill nicely..

I think I would add something to Who Builds The Toughest, Most Reliable, that you are willing to carry. The GP100 or or even the Ruger Blackhawk is about max for me.

I have a number of both Smith and Ruger revolvers in the magnum revolver calibers. I've never had one of either brand that wasn't rugged enough for anything any sane person would use a .357 magnum revolver for. Then again, I've never used them for anything but shooting, mostly .357 magnum loads, sometimes, but rarely, .38 special. The Smiths are, without a doubt, much more refined revolvers than the Rugers.

I have a S&W 686-4 6" that I'd sell if you end up going that route....

I’ve carried and shot my 586 quite a bit. But if your looking at Rugers, then aesthetics don’t matter much. Geesus,... standards. Your kinda high brow for a country guy! I better hire a feng shui consultant to pick out some assthetic grips to salvage what little credibility I'll have left if I go Ruger.

I know at one time, not sure if they still do, but Corbon used the GP100 for load development and testing.

Ruget Redhawk 357 nothing stronger
I'd second that. "The M-27 & M28 S&W built on the N-frame probably stouter than the GP-100" If not stouter than certainly just as strong. The L frames are no slouch either.
