It's in a yard down the street. Always wondered. Finally saw the lady who lived there when she was getting her mail and asked her. "I have no idea." Must be a renter. What is it?

An old, out of service, callbox. Probably requires a key to open that's long lost.

That would be my guess too.
Just looked up images of "old fashioned fire alarm box".
Sure looks like it.

Yep. They had similar all over Boston through the 70s maybe early 80s. Cops had them too, but their boxes were blue.

Damn. I told my fiance that this was the best place to find out. You all came through with an amazingly-fast high level of knowledge. Many thanks.

My first reaction was "old fire alarm box". Looks as though I was probably correct. It's reassuring to know my brains memory banks are still somewhat functioning. Even though I can't seem to recall a lot of other stuff these days.

As the smart men before me have stated it’s an old fire call box.

My Dad carried a key for one of those boxes for many years until he retired.

Ours weren’t locked. Pull the door open and yank down on the trigger.
Remember very few false alarms. Different times.
