Ok, here's today's stupid question...
Can a slow twist barrel, like the 1/14 in my 788, be regroved to a faster twist... same barrel just regroved?
Kent
No way I would do it even ifn I could, might as well just get a 223. 222 and a bunch of 50gr Blitz or 40gr v-max, ahh life is good.
I would have got him too but a Dad Blam snow flake hit me in da eye....

I bought a rem 700 pss in 223 because the ammo was so cheap and wanted to use it to get in some inexpensive trigger time. How ironic. It shoots anything I have put through it that is 55 gr sub moa, even the really cheap stuff. Anything heavier and it is all over the place. Luckily, I bought a case of pmc 55 gr before all this mess hit.
I don't see the point in having both a 223 and a 222 but I would love to have a 22-250.

Theres a .223 Win Mag? Yep 223 WSSM-Winchester super short magnum and it's a barn burner too, I don't think the 22-250 can touch this. A 60gr bullet @ 3750fps, or how about a 40gr bullet @ 4330 fps, a 75gr @ 3375

You could sleeve it with a new twist rate. Interesting... probably better to just buy a 223 to shoot heavier bullets. Kent The .222 I mentioned early was built with an 8” twist. Shoots very well. But it is rather pointless due to the magazine length in those Sako’s.

I do believe the mag length on the rem 788 222 would allow you to shoot longer bullets in a tight twist barrel if you chose to go that direction. I shoot 105 bergers in my 788 243, and the mag length allows for that bullet. The 788 mag has a longer length than most, if not all other factory magazines.

Hand loaders are getting 4500-4600fps but nasty throat erosion, hell they're burning 45 gr's of powder to get it.. IDK, how many bullets will leave a vapor trail down to the target? I would throttle back a hair all that noise and racket for a prairie dog or coyote? people are nuckin futz.

I had a 788 222 back in the day and it had plenty of mag length, but the bullets were just fat stubby little sp's. No plastic tip ammo in those days and 50gr shot the best for me, today you might have a bit to play with because the 50 v-max and such are pretty long, i would try a 40 gr v-max for some speed, I wish I had these kind of bullets then.. I had a 6mm 788 also and I could seat 105 Speer's out a little but It would run into the lands.

You could sleeve it with a new twist rate. Indeed...but I'd only do that to shoot heavier bullets. If it was a .222 or .223, I'd chamber to .223 AI to get more out of it with longer and higher BC bullets.

Imagine the giants you could slay and the Fudds you could piss off with a 45gr TSX at 4300fps or more. I wouldn’t be afraid to drive one through the front axle of an elk.
