Not sure if I was awake or asleep, but partially dreaming. And the question came to my mind (seems like I heard this somewhere) but can you shoot a 45 Colt cartridge in a Marlin 1895. I see no reason why you can't but I don't know. May have known sometime in the past but it escapes me now. Not sure why this is even bothering me as I haven't been out to hunt this year and probably won't make it. Basically i'm one month from my 70th trip around the sun. Who knows and how'd it go when you tried it? Thanks

IF it is chambered in 45 Colt.
Otherwise in a .45-70, ~six thousandths of bore windage would make it act more like a musket than a rifle IF one survived the detonation...

The 1894 is chambered in 45 Colt, not the 1895. Mine shoots very well.

Ya think? See the capitalized "IF"?
I couldn't find the tongue-in-cheek or sarcasm emojis.

The base diameters and rims are different. Bullets are 452 for the 45 Colt and 458 for the 45-70.
Inaccurate and pressure problems: the chamber would react to the undersized case and your day may be ruined by escaping gas through the action. NOT a good idea. Always look at the case dimensions compared to the chamber: you will answer your own question. If charged by a grizzly and only one 45 Colt cartridge left with your 1895? Maybe then....

Crazy idea, I know, woke up thinking about that one night and couldn’t shake it. I seldom remember dreams.
