if this is your last house, i'd take another look at granite. its expensive because it's worth it. solid surface is nice but will get scratched and dingy after 20 years. i replaced 20+ y/o corian with granite and decided to splurge. i have about 25 feet of counter and it was about 3 grand installed. lots of grades are more expensive or cheaper.

Corian and Laminates rival granite costs if comparing to Commodity granites. Quartz does burn unlike a previous poster. Well actually the resin does and you get a nice clear “Quartz” circle that used to match the rest.

I built a granite shop into 4 divisions including about every kind of surface. Looking at your kitchen I was going to say right on the edge of 45-50 sq ft. That’s the magic number if you get into higher end stones. Those you buy the slabs then pay fab which ends up costing more than commodity colors.

Soapstone as someone said would be my low end now. I like it, it looks good when it’s oiled, etc. Butcher block looks good in the right place. I’m currently going to start a copper sheet counter but I’m using up a gallon of crystal boat epoxy I used to fill knot and worm holes in a pretty interesting floor. I’m not doing wood edge. I’ll roll the edge.

You can probably still buy granite “blanks” basically straight runs. Cheap import stuff but if you have Diamond tooling you can fab it yourself. Gran Quartz is your friend not cheap knock off supplies. You’d want the 3cm stuff. Gotta watch because a lot is 2cm. Your peninsula might be a problem. You can buy it with a finished edge but the seem cut by hand would be a challenge. You could get creative there and adjust the height of the peninsula slightly but you’d create a trap for gunk if it’s too close and may be unusable if too far apart.

I’ve done a few that I’ve really enjoyed - zinc was my favorite, plywood ‘base’ covered with zinc sheet folded and tack nailed. There is an art - we paid a guy in TN to do that one.

Next I’ve done on a few homes we build - 3/4 unfinished hickory hardwood flooring material. We just oiled it - tung oil - it’ll pick up a bunch of character in a few years. Wash with super hot water and re-oil as needed.
