I remember as a kid I would sit on the floor in front of dads wood gun cabinet, open the lower drawer, reach inside and pull out a box. It was a box of ammo. I wondered what the rifle must be like that could kill that big bear on the box. The cartridges were smaller than the 30-40 he let me shoot. Somehow they were so much more attractive than the 30-30 dad shot. So slender, sleek, small really, but that bear, look at him! This cartridge must be MAGIC! I don't know why dad had the box, we didn't have a rifle for it. Dad just had working guns, a Springfield 06, 7.65 Argentine Mauser (long John), Marlin 30-30, 30-40 Krag. But, no Savage 250-3000, and he'd never had one. I wanted one so bad. It was so mean looking with those silver tips. Surely a person could kill anything if he had one of those Savage rifles!

Well, I've waited too long to look for this box, in memory of my dad. I've got an empty spot above the loading bench for it. Time to start the search for a box of those magic 250-3000's with the bear standing up on the box. I figure I can start with a full box, sight the gun in and have enough left to get a big blacktail in honor of my dad with the cartridge that can kill anything.

If you find a box try different 100gr first they work well in my 250s.

Nice sentiment, Roy. I too marveled at the supreme killing power of Dad's small arsenal. No bear boxes in his ammo drawer though. If there had been I likely would still be sitting there on that floor!

It’s not a bear, but a standing muskrat mad from being pulled from the sewer.

Childhood memories ruined now. smile

There are differences between Western and Winchester ‘Bear Box’ ammo.

I can still smell my dad's pipe every time I plug in his hand tools and turn them on .

Its amazing how sights and smells can evoke memories .

My Dad had one Standing Bear Box he got with a rifle.
A deluxe 71 Winchester and a full box of 348s for it!
I have that box displayed prominently on a shelf in my Den. The rifle resides in a gun rack with some similar rifles.
The box I have has an O.P.A. sticker on it from the Gov't during WW2.
My Old Man used to say that 348 ammo looks like a box of hot dogs!

Any Bear box is difficult to find. But I have found it difficult to find one in 348 cal that has condition. Western box the Bear is standing upright. Winchester box the Bear is down with one foot raised. They can be found but carry a higher price for condition. GW

Well, in keeping with dads memory, it'll have to have iron sights. A 99 in DL, F, or especially that RS would have been way above dads paygrade so just a plain working gun. Probably one or both of these.

I happened to cross this one last night in 348 while searching, but no condition-

This one would work but isn't true to the memory of the "standing bear".
