What is the real world advantage of the 64 over the 62? (Not being snarky, genuinely curious.)

It is right there with the .375 H&H, whereas the x62 is more in the Whelen class.

A little more fuel tank and still fits 4 or 5 in most magazines. It is the full equal to the 375 HH and I like them both. I like All three if you count the 9.3x62.

The 9,3x64 is a really cool (and underrated) cartridge, but those Steyr S/M/L rifles were never really my thing. Both the gaping magazine well and the plastic magazines (keep in mind, it's not new polymer) are not my thing. That being said, the Steyr Luxus is a fantastic rifle and the actions of the S/M/L are also very smooth.

I have a Professional in 9.3x62 and the stock design is the one that fits me best for offhand shooting and does well from the bench. I used to thumb through the pages of the Steyr/Daimler Pugh catalog when I was 7 years old dreaming of owning a Professional in 9.3x62 or .30-06 and a Model S in 8x68s with the spare mag in the butt. I now have the first two but the 3rd is like hen’s teeth. This one is close though

I have owned several M Professionals and MIII versions in .25-06, .270 a couple of .30-06s and now a 9.3x62 and all of them would shoot under 3/4” with factory loads they liked. The .270 and .30-06s would do it with cheap Remington CoreLocks or Winchester white box loads. They are scary accurate

Thanks for the info, gents. I'm rehabbing a Husky 640 in 9.3x62, so I was just curious about the differences (other than the obvious one!). It's interesting that the x64 would be considered the equal of the 375, but in African places that mandate the 375 minimum, you'd still be out of luck. I guess it goes to show that the folks making the requirements don't always shoot for nuance and that the folks who made the cartridges (decades and decades ago) never imagined how beholden hunters would be to non-hunting bureaucrats.

I have a Steyr "Professional" in 6.5x57. Like you, the stock fits me to a Tee for off hand use. And the rifle is amazingly accurate. I should probably get it out and shoot it this year... Fantastic rifle! I had every intent on building a rifle in 9x3x64, but at my age, I don't think I'll bother... I have dies, brass and a Lothar-Walther barrel blank... GH

I didn’t know about the 6.5x57 being in the Professional. Now another one I need to find. I think my goal is to own every caliber they made in it. I still need that one and the 7x57 and 7x64. I am not sure if I have missed any of the calibers it was in

Pretty interesting 9.3x64. I have been down that road, owning a couple of them. Both are gone.

Shot deer here in SD and a ram in Texas with the cartridge and it simply worked.

I currently own a 375, if that tells you anything. Trying real hard to burn the barrel out on it. Love shooting it.

Have been playing with a 416 Remington lately and think the 375 might be in trouble.....

I have a 9.3x64mm and I really like it. With the 286 grain bullet it’s definitely equal to the 375hh and with the 250 grain bullet it will compete with the .338Win Mag. It will push the high sectional density 286 grain bullet at 2600fps and the 250 grain bullet at 2850fps.

I shot a big moose a couple of years ago. He was standing broadside at 370 yards and the 286gr Nosler Partition put him on the deck.

Wonder how the receiver got scratched up like that around the bases? Expensive rifle to take sand paper to.

pacecars - I have one in 8X68S (no mag in stock however) that is an absolute tack driver.......that’s the only reason that I still have it - rifles that accurate don’t come along very often. My bigger game hunting days are likely over so the need for an 8X68S is low......although I’d love to take an elk or moose with this one!

I have always been fascinated with the 8x68S since I was a kid. I don’t k ow why but it just looks cool. I don’t really need one but that has nothing to do with it I guess. Who ever said rifle loonies made pragmatic choices anyway?

Kinda the same for me - a friend built one when we were in Gunsmithing school and this one popped up on here and I got it - but as I said other than maybe a whitetail or black bear probably won’t get put to it’s best use?! The 9.3X64, subject of the OP, would be awesome as well and I bet that one shoots like the rest of the Steyrs’ (the ones I’ve shot anyway)!
