Old Charter and spring water. Budget night. I made my Nail with Johnnie black, partly for budget reasons but mostly so you wouldn’t yell at me for wasting Lagavulin 8. But it’s not peaty enough. Lagavulin 8 makes a killer Nail indeed. I should have done half and half. I think Johnnie has been skimping on Talisker and Caol Ila in his Black offering lately

Yeah, I'm not one for using high end stuff in mixed drinks. If I'm putting together a Manhattan the Rittenhouse BIB rye will do nicely, it isn't getting my 13 year old Van Winkle Family Reserve or 18 year old Sazerac rye.

I agree in general but I think it depends on the cocktail and on the whiskey. I don’t think an old fashioned benefits as much from something really good like a Vieux Carre or Sazerac might. The thing about the Rusty Nail is the peat is a key player and the rich Lagavulin peat is awesome. Also Lagavulin 8 is kind of an outlier... on the one hand it’s a $60 bottle of whisky and as a stand-alone is worth that... but comparatively it’s an 8 year old whisky and their lowest offering. It really kicks the cocktail up a notch. But it would still be a shame to use the whole bottle for cocktails
It’s a conundrum alright
Still, Johnnie black isn’t peaty enough now that I sold Lagavulin 8 to the devil of cocktails. What would be a cheaper alternative? Takisker Storm perhaps. Didn’t Ardbeg come out with a cheaper NAS bottle?

10 year old Laphroaig is a good bit less than Lagavulin 8 around here, and it certainly isn't lacking peat.

You’re right. Wish we had a damn Costco, Laphroaig is downright cheap there. I may need another online order...

Ryoushi - I found the Toki to be a little too peppery for me to enjoy straight, but after a few months of "a highball here and there" it really settled down and was very good to drink neat. Once that happened I regretted using any in a highball!
Not trying to tell anyone how to drink their whiskey, just found the transformation noteworthy.

I found the Toki to be quite mild, but I was drinking a pretty big flavored bourbon before opening this bottle. Glad you like the Suntory, Japanese whiskey sure has taken a while to catch on. It's popular enough now that it's hard to find the better bottles here.

Speyburn Bradan Orach. Not great but it's not gonna drink itself. Won't be buying another bottle.
