Biggest caliber, most powerful, or worst recoil? Largest caliber I have ever fired was my 50 caliber muzzle loader. Most powerful rifle cartridge was a 375 H&H mag. Worst recoiling gun is a 12 gauge Mossberg pump with a 3 1/2 inch magnum turkey load. Those 3 1/2 inch turkey loads are brutal. A 375 H&H is like shooting a 243 compared to launching 2 1/4 ounces of lead shot at 1200 fps.

10 gauge H&R and two .375 H&H magnums. Prior to that, I thought I wanted a .416 Rem Mag and a .458 Lott. Don't have any of them now. I did use 12 gauge 3" magnum slugs for 20+ years until they legalized "pistol cartridge rifles" here in Ohio

.460 Weatherby. Guy at the range was shooting factory ammo to fire form, and let a few onlookers fire a couple of shots.

Fired an Interarms 458 WinMag once. Actually it belonged to a member (former?) of this forum. 500gr full-house load. Recoil was stout.
My biggest/hardest kicker is a Marlin 45-70, but I don't lean on it.

378 Weatherby. No brake, no scope, offhand.
Didn't think it was all that bad, figured it would make a good elk rifle. But might be different from a bench. I'll stay with my 300 WM.

Big boom and it didn’t overpenetrate!! Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. I suppose that is the biggest handheld/shoulder-fired I've done.

460 WBY when I was stationed at Eielson AFB near Fairbanks, AK.
Old timer with lots of guns used to come to the range on base every once in a while. He let me fire it once and I almost blacked out from the recoil.
50 BMG prone Barrett semi-auto with a brake was a pussy cat in comparison.

50 cal TC Hawken. 12 ga. 375 HH But the most memorable and most misdrablr and most painful kick was from a light 20 high grade English stocked straight grip Citori when i pulled the trigger on a heavy slug in the bottom barrel.

Can’t compete with artillery or military AP rounds.
For sporting applications largest calibers - 458 Win Mag, 458 Lott, 450 Rigby Rimless, 500 NE 3”
Significant recoil - 400 grain loads @ 2350-2400+ MV in various 416s & 404s in lighter weight rifles.
All interesting for their intended purpose.
