Nice Mauser. I used to wonder if that action would be a candidate for a light weight. I think they normally are 8#+ depending on version.
My idea on paper was a walnut stock trimmed down similarly. Then a Timney trigger. Knowing that it can drop to 6# confirms my guess. Good to know.

Beautiful rifle and concept. One in any of the versions would be fun to hunt.... particularly in 6.5X57.

Btw: has anyone ever put a 1903 Mannlicher full-wood 6.5x54 carbine on accurate scales to see if they really weigh only 5 -1/2 lbs ...? Personally I believe that figure be wrong for a number of reasons.
Mine is 6lb-11.6oz. The claw mount bases and the unsupported weight of the sling added a tad to this, but the clean weight is probably 6.5lb at best. Nowhere near 5.5lb!

I like the "Classic DWM" and the "Classic New SL."
Very nice rifles all around.

Check out R J Renner in sparks Nevada . Pre War bolt actions . He makes slim down versions Ruger, Remington , Winchester , Mauser ? Versions of Mauser classic sporters A or B . Or English . I Just had him do a old 270 Win in a pre 64 FW in English type stock. Stock had recoil pad added before I got it in 1980 LOP 14 3/8 . Ron Kesselring put Douglas barrel on it rechambered to 270 win in 1983. Just a great old user rifle. Real value is my memories of past hunts and old hunting partners . I hunted SE Montana when no body was talking about it . a 270 was a great rig for that area I am going drive down and pick up next week. I haven't seen it yet. Rodger said it turned out real nice. He hand never done a Pre 64 FW 70 before. I told him to slim it down my old Girl all he could. She was a 1955 model 30/06 with strait comb stock. He cut Mag box had to cut trigger. added barrel band sling stud , short forend with a little cheek piece . Said its a just shy of 6 .5 lbs. with wood stock . No scope on it . Rigby type frount sight . She will be a trim beauty I think . If you like classic mauser sporter , Or English magazine classic check it out. I have really enjoyed working with Rodger on this project .

I used to have a '98 in 30-06 in a Brown Precision stock. I milled the bridge, custom made a one-piece skeleton scope mount, turned the steps off the military barrel, put in Parker-Hale aluminum bottom metal, a Timney trigger and Burris compact 6X scope. Fully loaded, with sling, it came in at 7 1/2 lbs, and didn't cost me a small fortune.
Nothing to look at, but it was a handy packer, 1.5 MOA shooter, and kilt a buncha stuff before I loaned it to a brother in need of a rifle for hunting season. He pawned it after season instead of returning it.
He's dead now..... (no, it wasn't me).
The only true cost of having a dog is its death.
