The two holes were there, gun is just as I bought it. In the close to 20yrs I've had it, I don't even remember coming close to it with a screwdriver. I put a box of ammo through it shortly after buying it just to check operation and that has been it.
Has had me stumped as to origin, 2 scenarios I guess- maybe put together by an employee (03/82) for a hunting trip to N Alberta and left up there ( where I bought it) or probably more likely someone bought a barrel from Numrich and figured out the magazine issue which seems to have been a problem with others trying that.

The two holes are odd. But I think the barrel and receiver date to the same time period. So, it's interesting.. If it was more recent than 20 years, I'd almost wonder if somebody didn't try to mount a light on the side or something.

C to C of screw holes is 0.600, maybe that will help narrow down what might have fit to those more knowledgeable than me
It sat in the rack at the Edmonton GS for probably close to a year before George convinced me that I had enough other levers and needed a Savage- and here we go...

Looks like someone drilled it for a lyman 56 or 66 receiver sight.
