With this latest shortage of everything shooting related and the fact that a friend gave me some 8/57 brass I was wondering What would be needed to use this in the 7/57? I am assuming that I would have neck thickness issues if I just ran it through a size die and trimmed it. Would I need a neck reamer for the inside of the case or a uniformer for the exterior? What is recommended ? This is been on my mind the last few years because finding brass is not easy for my rifle and soon to be retired so cost is a consideration.

Not a gunwriter, but:
If you have a .308 WCF or .300 Savage die you might use it as an intermediate step to make things easier.
Turn the outside of the necks after necking down, you will likely have the dreaded donut since the shoulder is becoming neck.
To determine how much to remove, be guided by the OD of the neck with a seated bullet compared to a factory round.

I have made exactly that conversion, with no difficulties whatever. It is important to anneal before you do it.

I've only made 7x57 out of .30-'06 cases. I run them into a Redding form & trim die for 7x57, hack saw the necks off, deburr the mouths, then resize them in a 7x57 die and trim. I've had no neck thickness problems with this method. Unexpectedly, making 8x57 this was has required neck turning to get the neck thickness in spec.

I would anneal, lube, and then set up the intermediate die 308 or Savage to just touch the shoulder on one of your 7x57 cases. The 8x57 body is slightly longer than the 7x57. Then run it through the 7x57 sizer, if you have a Lee collet die I would remove the expander from the sizer die and then run it through the colllet die. I would make a paper clip scratch gauge and see if there is anything in the way of a doughnut there. The inside reamer is faster but outside after running it over the expander ball is more uniform, if there are any eccentricities the inside reamer will follow these. Good chance you will not have to turn or ream the necks depending on your chamber tolerances, just make certain before you try a full power load.
6mm Remington and 257 Roberts are really easy usually just needing a pass in the sizer die if you get a chance to snag any of these cases.

I just turned a bunch of brand new RP .30/06 brass into 7x57. It is as simple as running it into your 7x57 sizing die, then shortening the necks with a small pipe cutter, resize them again, then trimming to size. Chamfer inside and outside the case mouth. Done. (No tricks other than don't get lube on the neck or shoulder (but obviously lube inside the case neck) or you will get wrinkles.)
The case mouth thickness is a little thinner than PPU 7mm Mauser brass. They work fine.

I necked up .257 Roberts cases once to make 7x57. They were a tad short but worked ok.

I use 7X57 bass to make 6.5X57 for my Steyer M rifle. I know now is not the time to find much. I'm guessing the 7X57 brass will be available again. Not a pretty rifle but accurate. Have a great day. Jim

Nosler 7X57 brass is easy to find right now.
If you want to pay $2.25 a piece for it....

Uh, no. Besides being 2mm (c. .070") shorter, more importantly the base diameter ahead of the extractor groove is also c. .007" larger on the Swede.
