I've waxed the outside of the barrel and the stock before.

Bullet lube for bullets. wax for paint, I'm guilty of using TC Bore Butter on bores, but again, it's made for that purpose, annnnddddd, works quite well. Put a dab on and pull it through followed by a dry patch when putting it away for a bit, a few patches if shooting anytime soon.
