Cookie was out chasing spring birds on a recent wet snowy morning and encountered some Turkey Vultures having issues finding a thermal. Got a couple close shots with her camera. Damp vulture: Slightly closer portrait: Usually can't get very close and never realized they actually have eye lashes. Have a good one,

Nice pictures. It's creepy when they spread their wings to dry while perched.

They are nasty, but sure can fly. We have been invaded by black buzzards in the last ten years. Climate change?? They came from Mexico like all the Meskins.

Nice pictures. It's creepy when they spread their wings to dry while perched. But not when an annhinga does the same...

Looks a lot better than my ex gf's sister. Better disposition too no doubt. Reminds me of old Sanfred and Son episodes, except her name wasn't Aunt Esther.
Good photo 1 minute.

Oops, I read the title and thought it was a PM intended for me. Yea, vultures are creepy. An aerodynamic masterpiece but not much in the looks department.

The reason for that face is that a feathered face would be constantly caked with blood and gore. In other words, their distant ancestors had feathered faces (some more than others), and those with more feathers had a higher chance of acquiring a skin infection and dying. Those with slightly fewer face feathers were less prone, so more likely to pass on the genes for sparse face feathers. That preference for fewer face feathers led eventually to bare faces being the norm.

Still better than Piglosi face.
Due to the increased price of ammo, don't expect a warning shot...

Great photos! Yes those are some ugly birds. Clint Eastwood recognized that they, too, have a place in the universe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML6oLuLecQ4

Still better than Piglosi face. Much more useful to society too. KC

Highly specialized equipment on the T-V. They are usually polite around here unlike the bitch-ass Black Vultures that get after bovines during calving.

Natures clean up crew. Within 2 days of death they come in and make a carcass disappear.
