Not as a beverage anymore but as an ingredient in cornbread. Corn bread BTW is not very common in Germany. Some elder people still have nightmares when thinking of the stuff that was given to them under the name von "cornbread" after WWII.

Grandmother would drink the crap.
And she felt that if she liked it and wanted it,
I did too.

Forced me to drink it.

Buttermilk is nasty.
Granny wasn't much better.

My grandmother loved it.She'd pour it in a bowl, crumble up cornbread in it, and that was her supper many times. We keep a carton in the fridge to cook with, but I'd never drink it unless I was absolutely forced to.

Use it in several dishes
I've drank it before, but not as a rule.
Hard to find in this neighborhood anyway.
Granny and aunt both did the crumbled cornbread
in a glass of buttermilk and drank it like the best
milkshake that ever was.
Granny lived to 95
Aunt 91 and still here
Mother didn't like it and passed at 88

My dad used to crumble cornbread into a glass full of bm plus salt and pepper. I have tried many times to like it but haven’t succeeded yet. Maybe I ain’t trying hard enough.

I haven't had buttermilk since I was a kid, but I'm partial to lassi, which is not a million miles away from it. It is plain yogurt mixed with water to a consistency like milk, with a bit of salt and sometimes a few mint leaves. Goes well with a hot curry. Anyone else like it?

Mom and dad, both grandmothers and many of my kinfolk loved buttermilk but I never could stomach it. One of my earliest memories is eating at a restaurant with parents, me about 3 or 4 years old, and dad sneaking and having the server give me a glass of buttermilk instead of my usual whole sweet-milk. First sip I gagged and threw the glass as far and as hard as I could breaking it and spit as much as I could that I already had in my mouth all over the counter top. Don't mind buttermilk pancake, biscuit, etc., mixes but still can not drink it straight.
