And - you can pass the starter on to your friends! "My great-grandmother started this buttermilk during the Civil War."

Nothing like a plate of silage and a glass of buttermilk!

when I was a kid we had a few milk cows. Mom would make butter and save the buttermilk. My brother loved it but I couldn't stand it. Still can't.

My father used to buy concentrated buttermilk in big yellow barrels to feed hogs. We still may have a couple of the barrel staves.

Few things in the world smell as good as silage. I've ate some too.

Probably had a little "nectar" mixed in. Was it cloudy? Did you get pregnant after imbibing?

When I was a short person, I could not stand it. However, as I have aged quite a bit, I do enjoy buttermilk. Like beer, the colder, the better. Way back when, I remember it used to have little yellow flakes of butter in it. My understanding is that the processing has changed a bit. I don't like lowfat buttermilk near as much and the "Bulgarian Style" is much better tasting. My favorite brands are Dairy Fresh found in Alabama and parts of Mississippi, Hiland found in Arkansas and Borden found here in Texas. Of the three "Bulgarian Style" buttermilks mentioned, I like Dairy Fresh and Hiland the best. Never tried it with black pepper. Goes real good with corn bread. Odd how a person's taste can change over the years. My wife cannot stand it, but sure likes what I cook with it. Try it as a replacement for regular milk, or what we used to call "sweet milk", when making gravy. Good stuff there!
