The John Birch Society used to fight for freedom through educating the public mostly. I can't speak to anything recently. There were some major conservatives that did more with the money than NRA ever did with the same.

I did a long stint in Rotary - mostly excellent and unselfish men and our groups did a ton of good work - very service-oriented to the local community - especially for students and organization for the needy We also participated in the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. The Four Way Test is a good basis. When it came time to walk away, the members were very gracious - presented me the original club bell.

Lion for nearly 30 years.
Scholarships for graduating seniors, vision screening for grade school kids, etc.
Our club pretty much sticks with local activities.
I don't see anything wrong with clubs. Seems like a good way for folks to meet other people and have a good time, and they do participate in some decent charity work. I joined the Elks club here for a couple years ~ 10 years ago, but just never went to the club a lot. GF and I would have Sunday breakfast or dinner there every once in a while, though. Sunday breakfast was a pretty impressive spread for the money.

I have avoided clubs thus far, but one organization does some pretty decent work around these parts for disabled hunters and fishermen. NASA, the north american squirrel association! I golfed in one of their tournaments once for lack of anything better to do! They raise a ton of money around here!

I think they are great. Provide a sense of community, do a lot of good for the community and might just improve their members.
Wish I belonged to one. But, I'm not a joined. The concept is appealing, but people are involved.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!

Call me an idealist, but I've often wished I had enough money (lottery winnings really, even though I rarely play) to be able to really help people.
But, how do you find those people? Sister said "It's easy ask around, they will come to you".
"Yeah, right!"
Thing is, the people I'd want to help? Won't ask.
They will patch the patches before they beg.
Our mom found herself widowed and homeless with a handicapped 10 year old and 2 younger siblings. Friends stepped up, it was well known in a very small community. But, she didn't beg. Didn't go around making her problems someone else's.
People that ask for help, are usually just beggers.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!

I belong to a Southern Baptist Church which is pretty much a club. I restrict my donations to only the local charities we provide. Like our food bank, the ladies quilting, and our local children's outreach. I don't put into the general offering because too much of that gets sent to the SBC and Louisiana College neither of which I support . They fight over money and waste it.

People that ask for help, are usually just beggers. You are so right. Look around and you can find folks to help that need it and won't ask.

Asked a guy about Elks Club. He said they were picky about membership though I would be fine as a retired fireman. They actually background their members since they work closely with youth groups. They have kind of a pecking order like seniority and that they invest a lot of money out of their own pockets. He said it wasn't uncommon for members to kick in $10k a year. I'm not that benevolent any more.
