I obtained this folding sight in a pile of gun parts I got. I saw this fine checkering on another old Mauser sight but this has a wide dovetail and is bigger than the other I saw. Can't figure out what it goes to. Any thoughts?
I have seen those a few times in the past. I am uncertain if Mauser made them or purchased them I have seen the same sight on Mannlichers too In fact, I have one on one of my own guns and have seen them on several others but "factory" guns and many cottage industry guns made in Germany and Austria. They were very common on those rifles from the 20s clear through the early 70s. Here is the one on my 8MM OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by .com/photos/156296479N08/]Steve Zihn, on [bleep]
The folding rear sight on my "Guild" rifle is the twin to that sight. I've seen so many like it on German rifles over the years I'm convinced there was an obscure company someplace making them for the German gunmaking trade. Kind of like Lyman and their #6 folding sight that pops up on about a third of the American rifles made during the 20th century that had aftermarket peep sights and/or scopes installed.
