I often wondered the same thing--especially at the time the WSMs appeared, which was before 6.5mm became the "in caliber." Around 2003 I hunted in Texas on the King Ranch, and my guide was a rifle loony who'd built a .25 WSM, and loved it. Sort of like a slightly less zippy .257 Wby. in a short action.

In fact I know several gun writers suggested a .25 WSM to Winchester back then, but they went with the .25 WSSM instead.

i still wish Winchester would build a 25 W.S.M. and now days probably with a 8 twist barrel but you can bet they won`t . so i am still debating if i should build another 257 Weatherby Mag. but with a 8 twist - 28 inch barrel ,i just need a donor rifle yet ? since Winchester never came out with a 25 W.S.M. which i think may be a better case for accuracy and easier for resizing on handloads ? but now finding W.S.M. cases will be harder to get and custom dies just might not be worth it either ? i have a new 257 Weatherby mag. reamer to use anyway and 257 Weatherby mag. bench rest dies already.

I have a 25 WSSM in a Cooper Varmint Extreme. I knew nothing of the cartridge when I bought the gun other that it was stocked in a very nice piece of French walnut and had a case colored action. At the time I was a Gun Library Mgr for Cabela's and got the gun at just above cost. I bought dies and 1000 pieces of brass. It's a great varmint gun with 75gr Hornady V-Max. Nice looking rifle you have there!

OK, but you are a fan of Remington's 8mm answer to an unasked question.

Which is why I asked my question. Am very familiar with the 6.5x55 and 6.5 Creedmoor--as well as the .260 Remington--having hunted and handloaded all three for a while now.

I know the 6.5xrr doesn't suck the doors off the 6.5 CM ballistically, so wondered if it sucks its doors off historically. I would certainly agree with that....

Even after well over a decade some folks still don't understand the reason for the 6.5 Creedmoor and assume that every comparison begins and ends with dick measuring maximum attainable muzzle velocity.

Great combination of shoulder - neck geometry,
Minimal case taper for capacity , Magic Shoulder Angle, combined with excellent throating.

Accuracy, consistency really is the outcome. The rest is history.

It may not create fuzzy feelings, but the 8x57 or 8mm-06 sure seems to reduce drama in my experience. Probably killed less animals in my lifetime than a gunwriter in one year but I have hunted from NM to AK, I had a guide in northern BC actually sneer at my choice, and the three days later offer to buy the 8mm-06. No glory, certainly no better than an '06, but just as good maybe. One thing that surprised the AK natives, they hardly ever see a moose go down within 3 seconds, and one shot. It happened twice, with a plain old Remington Core-Lokt 185 grain at a modest 2660 fps. I admit an example of two is useless, but still, no drama. So I think the little 8's are underrated. When my fortunes improved, I shot a 8 RM one time...and one time only, handed it back to the seller and attended to the cut on my eyebrow.

I don't believe the 8x57 has any particular magic, but a friend of mine and I still kick ourselves for not picking up a couple of the 700 Classics when they were being closed out at a tremendous discount. I handload, and at that time there weren't the component shortages we're seeing today. One of those rifles would have joined nicely with my 250 and 300 Savage Classics for being different at my deer camp.

grin grin

Never had a cut from any of them BUT I've seen it happen to others morenonce from an 06.
