someone had a thread about Royal Enfield awhile back. I pretty much dismissed it. I just watched a video on the Royal Enfield Himalayan, a 410cc Dual Sport bike. They must understand they have a reputation problem because this bike comes with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty for $4500 I would consider buying it, keeping it until the warranty is up and sell it for maybe $3500 if I was worried about it breaking down. Surely it wouldn't depreciate much more than that in a couple for years. They also have a couple of 48hp street twins for $6500 with a 3 year unlimited warranty - its a basic retro looking bike

There’s absolutely nothing that bike could do that a used KLR650 couldn’t do at least as good as, and likely better. I’d find a pre ‘95 BMW R100GS airhead. YMMV.

I wouldn't buy a motorcycle made in India. At least it has a metal frame. I’m fairly sure tata still makes trucks with wooden frames.

I wouldn't buy a motorcycle made in India. I understand that the American market is an after thought. They can sell everything they make in India and the middle east and save on shipping across an ocean. The one that is no longer available in America or Europe is the 500 Bullet. It can't pass the new emission standards because it's too old school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCt4LghPOu4&t=69s

I'd say the KLR650 would do alot of things better, maybe everything They’re not sexy, they’re not fast, they don’t do anything great. But they do everything acceptably. I’ve had 3 and I’d buy another one if I was in the market right now. Haven’t owned a bike in 3 (?) years. Longest period since I was 10 and got a gt80. Ive had a road bike continuously since I was 17. 95% were enduros of some sort. Actually the only brand new bike I ever bought was an ‘05 KLR650. My worst crash was a DR650. Still have a screwed up ankle and shoulder. So busy with work now, just don’t have time. Things slow down I’m looking for an older KTM 950.

Royal Endfield, (Royal oil fields) for those of us that owned them when they were made in England.. The KLR Kaw will have more power, be a better road bike as well. Also cost more money. They are both "Swiss Army Knife" bikes. They will do anything but nothing particularly well. Almost bought an Interceptor, but found a pristine K75s. A Cockroach for those that know. (what will still be moving after Armageddon).

How many miles have you put on one? Set up correctly, there’s worse options.

I think that is one thing RE really stressed in this bike - the engine is pretty refined by the counter balancer. They made this with the daily commuter in mind.
of course I haven't ridden it, haven't even seen one in person , I'm just going by the video I watched on it where Jay Leno talked about it.

How many miles have you put on one? Set up correctly, there’s worse options. they are boring. my mate rode one with surf racks from labrador to the darien gap. i help design the racks so i rode it enough to know i'd rather walk. my cousin rode a GS from capetown to egypt back in about 06. i rented one in jackson about 7-8 years ago and rode it around the wyoming range for a week. it's a fun bike. OP these guys used a couple on a pretty good mission.. not sure it's worth your time if ur not keen to surf. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OGdoJpCoItgtwo bikes i got to ride in nzed that we didn't previously have in this market is the kawasaki w800 and the yamaha tenere xtz660. if you deleted a bunch of stuff deus style on the w800 it's such a good power plant. i spent a lot of years on xs650 so similar engine but the W is way better for true highway speeds. less buzzy, set the suspension up correctly, wide bars, through pipes and have a good time. the xtz660 is a dream on singletrack. and at least the one i had a bit of grunt. so much more fun of a bike to ride then a klr.

I’d buy one if I lived in the mountains and could ride a lot. Otherwise I think you’d get bored with them pretty quick.
Don’t think you’ll get $3,500 used though.

i run a ktm 390 adventure - made in india for ktm. it is US-speced, and has been absolutely perfect through 2,600 miles. i just like thumpers, for some unknown reason, AND light weight. i will be 70 this month. i won't ride anything i can't pick up if/when it falls ...
