Can't speak to the slashy aspect, but I know firsthand that whatever STX was using this day was damned fine at the stabby part. The one he loaned me to use on another boar was similar, and worked very well too.

kamo gari;
Good afternoon to you my cyber friend, I hope that you and your ever smiling wife - and the dogs - are well.

Thanks for that photo, it looks like a very unique hunting experience for sure.

It reminds me of the conversation I struck up with a chap at the big flea market near Pearl Harbor. I was purchasing something to "have along" as I wasn't sure about Hawaii knife laws until I got there, so didn't bring one from home.

Anyways, being me I saw a photo of some hunting dogs and mentioned it, he saw my mountain sheep belt buckle and as happens anywhere a couple hunting nuts meet, we killed about 15-20 minutes swapping hunting stories until it was time to go with the family.

This chap ran black and tan hounds for chasing and what he called "Gen - U - Wine Hawaiian Hog Dogs" as catch dogs.

Anyways kamo - they hunted with either knives or sometimes very short spears and the photo reminded me of that incident.

All the best to you all!

Dwayne

All I know is that we piled off a truck driven by a madman and then chased a pack of mean dogs through a bunch of tangled tunnels made of evil thorns and stickers for what seemed like a mile, ducked in half or on hands and knees. When we got caught up to the evil hounds and everything looked right, the south Texas pork pokin' commenced. I was still picking the tips of thorns out of my hide 6 months later. Good eating, those buggers.

Translated into white guy speak as........buncha jackwagons snuck into the barn and started stabbing pigs in the farrowing crates.

They they thought to open the crates and turn the dogs out.....

Tell me where this can be done, please. The way Roger's game was played was far too much work. And kind of painful.

Superb nyife. Easy to sharpen/strop. Holds edge.

Hiya Dwayne,

Good afternoon back at you, my friend. One of my wife's closest girlfriends just moved back to Hawaii after living in NYC for 20 years. This friend of hers recently met up with one of her close childhood friends back in HI. This friend, it seems, lives to hunt and fish in his native land. His three favorite things are running pigs with his pack of ten+ dogs, fish for ahi tuna and free dive for octopus. I was told that it'd be easy for Tami to get me out with her friend hunting and fishing, as that is apparently all he does. The girls can sit around and drink wine while we act like indigenous folks. smile All we'd need to do is show up. I plan to take her up on it.

There is quite a bit of other hunting to be had on the Hawaiian islands. Feral goats, feral cows/bulls, game birds and some other stuff, including axis deer. If I understand it correctly, most of the hunting lands there are privately owned and it costs fairly big $ to hunt, but that there are places that are public use and can be hunted by anyone that can get there.

As always, I enjoy your words and input. Best to you for now, Dwayne. Oh, and I like your collection. Top left looks like a Gurkha knife. Very cool!
