The few times I’ve only had my 17 HMR, it’s reminded me I should have brought my .223 or .243 instead.
My .25-06 shoots 1/4" all day long and I don't even have to do my part...

I don’t have a 17 her any more, sold it, but if I did, I’d never take it coyote hunting.

I’ve only shot one coyote with a HMR because that’s what I had in my hand at the time. 100 yard broadside shot, it ran about 100 yards and fell over. 17 grain VMax.

22 Mag here, never could get interested in 17's, I do have a couple 20P's though.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Stihl27: I have shot, and kill't, 3 Coyotes with my 17 HMR Rifles since 2,003 - all were one shot kills and all were pretty humane kills. I, of course, would choose other cartridges as my first choice when going on a dedicated Coyote Hunt but when thats all you have along and the range is conducive and shot placement is careful - it WILL kill Coyotes. Keep after'em! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Messed around with a 17 hmr, about 1 year, shot some critters with it, but couldn't find a place for it as a daily use gun, traded it off.Rio7

I took 2 with the hummer, 2 with 22mag, several with 17 rem, half dozen with 223. Ya the HMR will kill em, but watch where they run.
I would have got him too but a Dad Blam snow flake hit me in da eye....

I found it was cheap and handy, to use a AR-15 .223, no problem with ammo and the platform suits predator and pig hunting, better for me, and i very rarely have to go looking for what i shot.here's pig, coyote, bobcat , all 3 killed within about 1 hour. Rio7

I'm not agInst killing them with a 22 mag. I have a CZ 455 varmint barrel 22 mag with several yote kills on it. Most of the time I use a shotgun or the 204 now.
Just because you're offended doesn't mean your right.

Had a 17hmr for about a year and always left it behind and took the 223 or 22-250.

Texkken, what are you using for bullets? I have a combo gun that I use for coyote hunting in 5.6x52R(22 Sav HP)/12ga. 55gr Buffalo Arms .228 bullet

here in Northern Minnesota the coyotes are a little bigger and coyotes don`t like to come in to close when callin ,so a 223 and bigger cartridge is better 150 - 200 yards is more common for many of us. when running dogs on coyotes these rimfires work ok but some of us use a 22 Hornet then or a 223/556.

How many of you taken coyotes with a 22 or 17 hmr? My 17hmr lays them out Only two….one with a 22 mag…. 40 yards…. Spun and run about 15 yards. One with a 22 lr…subsonic suppressed…...30 yards…. Dropped at the shot…..cns…. Base of neck. All in all, I am not comfortable with 22mag or 22 lr…..unless at short ranges and only if precise shot placement is possible. In my area, I want a “shot & drop” so they don’t over to my neighbors property. However, I had a conversation once with a ranch hand who just used whatever was handy, usually a 22lr…. He said it killed ‘em just fine but I am pretty sure he didn’t care if they ran off somewhere and died. He really didn’t like coyotes. Now working up a couple of rifles…. One is a suppressed 204…. Will see how it works.

I have killed them with 22 LR 22 WMR, 222 Rem, 223, and 22-250 but the only 17 I ever used was my Dad's 17 Remington SAKO. The first coyote I ever killed was when I was a boy of about 9 years of age with a 22 LR Pump rifle. (Winchester M62A which was my Dad's, and I still own it today) In fact I'd bet the first 10 I killed were all with the 22. I've killed a lot with larger rifles and handguns too, but those above are the calibers I used that are commonly thought of as "Varmint calibers".
Since the subject is about rim rifles I can say my rim rifle experience was with 22 LRs and 22 WMRs from both rifles and handguns.
The 22LR with solid HV 40 grain bullets kill them fine. Not as dramatic as the center fires, but I can't ever remember shooting one with a 22 that got away even when I killed them with a revolver.

17 HMR is the perfect gun for small varmints. I can hit ground squirrels at 200 yards if their standing. Accurate, flat shooting and explosive up to 100 yards or so.

17HMR is perfect for rodents like ground squirrels, tree squirrels, prairie dogs and rabbits. At 100 yards and under it’s explosive. I have killed ground squirrels at 200 yards with it. It shoots flat thanks to it’s high ballistic coefficient and velocity. I hardly ever use my 22LR and 22Mags now that I have my 17HMR.
