One of the silliest things I heard was when civilian ROs up here started saying, "Eyes and Ears!" Before that, it was, "Shooters ready?"
'Shooters ready?' used to mean 'Shooters ready?', but it hasn't for years now.
Eyes and ears! Shoes! Underwear!
Hand up on 5!
No underwear here! Cease fire!
Having attended or run several thousand shooting classes/quals I learned that mere humans sometimes forgot stuff and appreciated being reminded about the important things...like safety. There was often some arrogant know it all who resented having their omnipotence not adequately recognized. YMMV mike r

YMMV mike r Like you, I was part of 1000s of classes, teaching armament and explosives courses, ranges, etc while in the military and on civilian ranges. Here, we had asst RSOs. A 4 to 1 ratio of staff to students/shooters. We never had a problem with arrogant people or smart asses. Walk that road and you got tossed out.

Did you constantly check for and correct safety violations or did you practice "big boy rules"? mike r

The military has very strict rules for both staff and shooters.

Civvy ranges here always have ROs, and "eyes and ears" has been part of the directions for a lot of years, both for practice and competition. It isn't just for the benefit of the shooters, but also for spotters, bystanders, people filling mags while they wait their turn etc. As mike r said, mere humans sometimes forget stuff and appreciate being reminded about the important things.
On military ranges the same applied, although back in the day it was "ears on", eye protection as part of the PPE coming in after I'd finished.

I use them on targets and plinking - but plugs won't fit in with my hearing aids, and muffs make them backfeed ! So, I kinda get nekkid, when time allows. Aids out - muffs on. Critters don't generally give much time, though.

Muff, plugs, both, Radio muffs running equipment.
Never been on a range with RSO's They probably have them for competitions at the club. Never been near there when that's happening.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!

I always just referred to them as ear protection.

Targets in the pasture, or plinking - no problem. On the range, even with electronic muffs - I have a hard time hearing commands.
