Wifey was a painters widow for several years. Out the door in the summer by 6:30 AM - Home by 9:00 PM, 7 days a week.

Winter months, I got home closer to 6:30 PM

I’m happy that I’ve been able to unwind that schedule the last couple years.

2 months and a few days, and I’m done painting for others.

Drove truck for years .
Around 70 hours in the last 8 days was a running theme.
On the book. That was pretty much only the driving time.

Averaged 3100 miles per week.
315hp, 55mph truck. Couldn't log any on duty not driving.
Usually had 1-2 days off each week.

Not at all counting the log books that showed I had been off all last week!😉

Used to work every hour of overtime I could get at the factory.
Feel it more now, don't need it either.

Now, if I'm busy and the boss comes by telling me to work whatever overtime I need to. I step it up, try to get it done with as little overtime as possible.

Partly, because I feel that's the right thing.
Partly because I really don't want to be there any longer than normal.

I just hired a lady yesterday. Doesn't want more than 20 hrs. Has some side gigs that pay way more than I can offer, but wants to stay in the industry. Lots of folks working part time while the spouse has a full time job, just to get out of the house, or have some fun money.

There's been plenty of days I've past 34 hrs on the third day of a six day week, but I'm just a dumb farmer, I don't know any better....

55 mph! Ouch.

On a new gig, OTR, however, salaried. Can negotiate on an ongoing basis. First three calendar weeks averaged 3650 miles. 34 hours? Yah, that's how hours off. LOL Then last week was only 2700 and I'm screwing around at home for a few days. My bargaining chip just disappeared. Dohhh!

Glad you found something at least, even if not perfect.

Sometimes being a workin' man sucks. Other times, it was fun and I had experiences others never would get.

Still.............................................

Yeah, that's kind of why I put the whistle thingie there.

I made it to 32 before I quit that lifestyle..................and I had to work to do it.

Had I been wealthy, I doubt I'd have reached 25.

Theoretically, I suppose the answer is yes. Depending on the species (some are carnivorous, some are omnivorous or even mostly vegetarian), there's lots of wheat, soybeans, field peas, beans, corn gluten, DDG,, that sort of ingredients. Thing is, it all needs to be ground up and run through an extruder to make the starches digestible, and the entry point of one of those puppies is in the millions. So we just grow and sell hay, and buy feed. Maybe, when I grow up and get to the 20 million pounds a year mark, a feed plant will make sense.

It's simple math. The numerator is a total of hours worked by everyone. The denominator is the number of people who are counted. When a bunch of figures added to the numerator are zeroes but the number of people in the denominator aren't reduced accordingly, the quotient drops dramatically.

Schneider in the early 90's.
Cabovers, 315 Cummins, 62mph tops.
Trip recorder, 55mph to get bonuses, bonuses required to get raises.

But, we had air ride, and power steering. The trucks without it were still there when I started, lucked out and wasn't put in one.

Before that, I ran log trucks. They were reliable.
Nothing more good to say!

I don't think the zeros are figured.
But consider all the fast food places. 1 or 2 full time jobs?
Heck PennDot works the guys 8 hours unpaid lunch.
That's 37 1/2/wk. They do it to save money. Twice.
1 is obvious.
2 is the 2 1/2 hours extra time guys have to work before they are paid
overtime. That adds up big in winter when they have to plow.

And a lot of the guys talking working long hours, aren't even reporting hours.
No one cares about business owners, truck drivers, salaried people's hours.

Thanks buddy. It's all good, sigh.... That night job, and dealing with a vindictive prick, was literally draining the life out of me. This is working pretty good. They want me home weakly. Can't say that for many outfits.

That's 10X the average hours worked in Oregon.

Collectively.

In the military..
Cant even think of it in " how many hours per week"
It had its ebb and flow on " hours"

Last civilian gig
12 hrs per day
28 days on 28 days off

Really DGAF about the " working poor" and their tremendous hrs of labor.

They get propped up by welfare and tax bennies by deliberately staying under income thresholds to begin with of mostly their own choosing to not lose unca suga,s gravy train stuff.
Borderline welfare rats for the most IMO.
And plenty of social workers to key em in on schit to keep em on the dole......
Not to mention millions of fuggs in these service industry jobs refusing to go back to work collecting expanded UI bennies.
The Covids....
I'm scared to go back to work schit excuse.

Buncha bullschit to pay fuggs more to sit on their azz and play the game.....

More gawtdamm help wanted signs around here than ever before.
Aint no fughing shortage of jobs around here for damm sure.
Just lazy azz fuggs getting more sitting on their azz than they ever made working.....

I'm such a DIK for saying stuff like this....

this ^^^^, but not really too much of a "DIK"

Job I had before retirement, working at a lower rate than previous because I liked the work, some two week periods I'd have my regular 80 hrs + 120 hrs of overtime. Worked out so I was making about the same yearly as the higher paying gig, but I liked the work better and I got 3.5- 4 months off every winter.

I also had to live in a 28' camp trailer and on tug boats, get up every few hours to do "welfare checks" on the machinery and my swimming charges, sleep with the friggin boat banging around in locks and docks, and be away from my wife and dogs for months at a time except for a couple of weeks off during the season.

So I'm no fan of whiners, "I can't find a good job" blah blah blah, bullshat either.

Work is out there, go find it I say. Can't move away from mama and the kids? Oh well, if that's the case than quit your bitchin'.

Boomer, good deals on getting home weakly.

If your truck ever passes this way, or relatively closely, let me know.

What he said. Wife cooked at the local college and hospital. Was NEVER able to work 40 hrs. at either so she wasn't "full time" and the cheap
SOB's didn't have to pay, give benefits.

Obama Care's a huge portion of that equation for employers. Once someone goes over (I think it's) 29 hours a week your labor costs explode. The option is to keep most employee's under 29 hours a week or go out of business.

I just checked my pay stubs for the year and have already put in more than 320 hours of OT this year. I can't imagine working 35 hours a week. I'd go stir-crazy.
