I probably won't either, at least much. I have two Super Grades, one in .30-06 and one in .270. They are very pretty and extremely well made. But they are heavy. I've got Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x40s on each. They're really heavy.

I had been hunting with a 50's vintage Mannlicher Schönauer .30-06 with a 70s vintage Weaver K4 in a Paul Jaeger QD mount handed down to me by my Grandfather. But that gun is retired while it's in good shape to hand down to my son. I bought a Ruger M77 stainless boat-paddle stocked .30-06 years ago that I also gave to my son recently and replaced with a Browning X-Bolt Composite Stalker. So my X-Bolt will be my primary hunting .30-06. My Super Grade, X-Bolt and Mannlicher are my only .30-06s.

Whaaaat?! A Remington and a Loopy? The trigger didn't freeze? The bolt handle didn't snap off the first time he cycled the action? The scope didn't poop the bed after a few rounds?

I don't believe it


In seriousness though with the mono bullets on the market now is there a reason/purpose for a very heavy loaded 30-06? I know the Partition does a lot of damage through fragmentation/shedding a good chunk of its lead core after impact, but it seems like a 165gr Barnes would be even heavier and with about the same surface area as a heavy 30-06 load.

I mean other than "I like them" which is just fine. But it seems any medium bore cartridge can do the same thing now (if it couldn't before)

I like the 308 with a 150 and about 2600fps. The 30-06 could of course do the same. I saw a post here where someone ran a partition like 4 FEET through a brown bear with similar ballistics.

All the above being true, if our history of cartridges never got above a 7mm bore, we would likely all say the exact same stuff about the 7x57.

Suppose if the Mono loses its petals, it sure isn't heavier than the heavy Partition anymore...dunno if it goes through the same amount of bear!

I'm pretty much landed at about the same with the 308 right now. Looking into loading some 130 TTSX pretty soon though.


BobBrown, good luck with the 7x57! Can only say I tagged one whitetail with it, but a 140gr Trophy Bonded Tip over IMR 4350 didn't leave much to be desired at all. Not the fastest powder in the Federal data but it worked.

Really can't imagine anything else doing anything practical that it can't, no.

30-30 AI can come close to those numbers. A .300 Savage will surpass that

Not sure I see where you are going with that. But the idea for me was to not crank it up to 10 and slam my shoulder when 2600fps keeps the brass happy and does the job.

300 savage and 30/30 are good ones too.

An Austrian rifle with an Austrian scope in the quintessential American cartridge should work for anything in either country

Yeah a 150gr TTSX at around 2650-2700 fps is a killing combination and easy on brass to boot 👍👍......Hb

Been shooting this one exclusively for awhile now. Nothing special; just a standard M70 .30-06 with a 4x Lyman. It's been in here many times before, but it's a favorite go-to companion that groups well with cheapo ammo (180 grain Winchester Power Points). It's killed deer, coyotes and lots of TX pigs without an issue. It looks pretty good, too.

VAHillbilly, I'm looking at about the same performance here, or a 130gr TTSX for 2900 fps, starting load basically, or dropped 2 grains and loaded in 7.62x51mm LC brass. Like you said, easy on the shoulder, easy on the brass, easy on my Garand.

And the cupped metal buttplate on a Kar 98k is a real shoulder tenderizer haha.

VaHbly, is that Barnes TTSX really good for whitetails? I have a supply of them for my 06 in 165gr, but haven't tried them.

They won't bounce off.

But the will they expand without hitting bone?
