Thanks for the info - I’ll likely try both 165 & 168 with Superformance & IMR 4350 my go-to powders on deer/elk guns. The 30-06 load with Superformance was about 3,040 FPS & sub MOA with 150’s. If I can get 3150 with a 165 & good accuracy that would be my definition of successful.

[quote=GSSP]IIRC, due to the COAL constraints with the 300 WSM, the 165's ogive works better than the 168. Same in the 300 WM.

Not a blanket statement .
Depends on the gun.
Winchester has plenty of magazine room

I'm surprised to be the first curmudgeon to ask "To what problem, then, is the 300 WSM the solution?" wink
I don't own a 300 WSM but I do think it's a great cartridge, and honestly, any of Barnes' bullets in the 165-200 grain range would be just great - probably the 150s too but they're a little more wind-blown.
But so would the 168 TTSX at 2900-ish in the Ought Six.

Best of luck on his elk hunt!

We hit some cold weather & wind and the firing pin froze as he had a big buck in the crosshairs-2 “clicks” instead of bangs caused both of us to lose faith in the Axis rifle he spent lots of time getting ready. The rifle had a FTF issue when we first got it as well. When I fired it after the deer was gone it shot of course - lack of trust is a good reason to replace an elk rifle to me.

Your elk rifle should be your most trusted firearm, besides your CCW. It should always be ready to go in a moments notice. Always dialed in with the load it likes and always ready to do its business... Its the kind of rifle that can sit in the safe waiting patiently, year after year...

I've taken three moose using 168 TTSXs out of my 300 WSM. All pass throughs, but my shots have all been at about 80 yards or less.

While I would be confident using this bullet at my maximum comfortable range of 300 Yards, If I was taking a long poke at an Elk, I might lean towards the 175 LRX - assuming you have a fast enough twist rate.

I've seen better results with the 30-06 200gr partition. If I were forced to do it again, I'd run the 200gr partition in the 300 wizzum... However, that's not the question in the op. I just bought 3 boxes of the 165gr TTSX's on Friday, so I can work on some loads for my 300 WSM, 30-06, and 300WBY. That's a good weight for the 30 cal running in the 2800-3200 fps range.. I believe the op decided on the 165/168 and hoping for a velocity of around 3,150 fps. Sounds like a good game plan to me. In a 300 wsm, I'd be happy with anything in the 3,100 fps range and sub moa accuracy. Shouldn't be too difficult to do that, I'd hope...
