If poon is an unacceptable answer, then I would have to say mule deer. I mostly just like seeing new country and chasing new critters though.

Evidently. You have been blessed.

All of em.
😁

That said, I never shelled out the money for sheep hunts like my friends did....sort of wish I did now that I'm getting old.
I love big mule deer...killed a few decent ones but never what I'd call big.
There was a time that those giant bears really drove me nuts.
I'd go to those big shows and those giant Browns and Grizzlies just mesmerized me.
In '96 I booked with an Alaskan outfitter that was taking some huge interior bears.
We saw a couple of 9 footers but they got away due to bad wind and crunchy snow.
(The guide took his kid after one of those giants that got away from us an he killed it, I'll find a photo later)
I settled for a small 7 1/2 footer after 17 days of hunting.
I still had the big bear fever badly and after 5 years was booked with a top Brown Bear guide on Kodiak.
I got lucky on that hunt, killing a 10 foot plus Booner.
Of all the hunts I've done, that one really stands out along with the hunts with my son.

Badass old pic.

Any recollection as to the year?

Yes, October of 1984. I was a bit younger then and able to run after the dogs in those Calif. mountains. No longer, however, as now I just enjoy the pictures and adventures of those who post here.

Probably 50% of the time, I reminisce about being back in that line of work, and actually feeling like I got something done with my day.
The other 50% of the time....I am reminded of what I get to do at work, when I am not chewing someone's ass for being stupid.

Game cam that was set out one evening not far from camp after a day of field work.

LW, was your Pacmyer rifle built by August or one of the boys? I knew a guy whose father was a friend of August back in the way back. The man built some incredible guns. Do you still have it?

Dude!!!!

That should win coolest pic of the campfire................................if I was running the award show.

That is the coolest face

I have always wanted to hunt those, at least see them in their home territory.

I do believe were I ever so lucky to get one, especially one like that, I'd be arguing with the woman here about dead critters in the house..

Might even have to get me a new house. wink

I've got the stuff, but haven't started that. Nice job there!

Brother Sam, deer far and away. I know most folks swoon elk. Elk are big dummies, that solve a grocery problem. 😂😂
I’ve killed better bulls of both common species than most folks will, never had one head mounted, never will, even if it was 400”, just don’t horn me up a bunch. Deer on the other hand, coues and Columbia blacktail get my attention….

There’s an unbelievable story to this rifle. It was my Dad’s. It was stolen, along with several other rifles and shotguns from my older brothers house when I was 14 years old.

I got a call almost 40 years to the day they were stolen by a cop in Gresham, Oregon telling me the Model 71 was located at a reputable gun shop where the owner had wanted to put it for sale on consignment.

GS had to run a check on the serial # before taking it in to sell - found it was stolen, called the police. I eventually ended up with the rifle. Both my dad and brother were dead.

The guy who had the 348 claimed he’d bought it years ago from another person. Put it in his closet, never used it and was now too old to hunt, so he started selling off his wares.

Dude was pissed that the rifle came up as stolen - he tried to fight for ownership, but I was having none of it. Cops surrendered the Model 71 to me.

None of the other firearms have ever resurfaced...This rifle was the only firearm I had hoped would show up. Like you said, if I could only have one. It would be a Mod 71 348 Winchester.
