Or just load less than a full mag.
My kid never shot her single shot again after trying the 15/22. She was mowing down sillywets yesterday at 50m offhand. even has a red dot on it to make it as easy/fun as possible.

Youngsters and semiauto guns are a bad combo. I'd be thinking simple single shot tools for the training process. Maybe a bolt gun. I understand what you are saying, it is an old school thought that has been passed along for ages. Honestly I don't think it really makes sense if the adult conducting the training is knowledgeable. A youngster with a semi auto isn't necessarily unsafe, wasteful or learning bad habits if the adult providing the instructions is worth their salt.

I had a Ruger 10/22 at age 8. Was a rifle, semi auto didn't mean crap. Was handy trying to blast red squirrels though. Managed a few offhand, but did better w a rest.
