King Solomon’s Mines, by H. Ryder Haggard.

The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame

Topper, by Thorne Smith

These are old books, but excellent. I would strongly suggest you invest in a Kindle and load it up. It takes up little space, weighs less than a paperback, and will run a long, long time on a charge as long as you keep the wifi off. One with backlight will let you read inside a dark tent. My Kindle is 11 years old, full of books, many of which were free, and keeps on truckin’. New ones are better.

Not so old, but full of action is The Hot Kid, by Elmore Leonard, creator of Raylan Givens and author of a whole passel of great westerns.

One of my favorites by a very talented writer. Might as well have a great Alaskana book while you’re here.

If you want to stay awake nights in your tent, be sure to read this one:

Undaunted Courage and Grapes of Wrath are both excellent, and previously mentioned and fall well within your areas of interest. Should be required reading in schools IMO.

Although I am astounded nobody mentioned "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross. But it is not for everybody.

Selous, Cummings, Harris, Baldwin, or Bell. All in Africa back before the continent was considered shot out and folks were either using cap locks or the first cartridges. I usually need to go through all of those at least twice. Try Abe Books online for good inexpensive buys of used books.

Herman Wouk's Winds of War and War and Rememberance.
Amazing on AudioBook.

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead

The first two of Jack Whytes Camulod Chronicles which is a recreation of the Arthurian legend, "The Skystone" and "The Singing Sword"

and if you really, really really want to wallow in an authors prose,

Lay Down my Sword and Shield, and Rain Gods, both by James Lee Burke.

Pity the poor critters that you encounter if you manage to digest those two.

ya!

I desperately need recommendations on a couple of really really awesome books. Thanks!!!

Quote

Born in1926 in Iola, Kansas, Don Coldsmith has had many jobs and several careers. After graduating from Coffeyville High School, Coldsmith served in the Army in World War II as a combat medic. After the war he graduated with a degree in Psychology from Baker University. He worked as a youth director for the YMCA in Topeka for several years and then went to Kansas University and earned a doctorate in medicine. Coldsmith practiced family medicine in Emporia, Kansas, for thirty years before he retired from that career in 1988.
Between his high school graduation and present, he found time to own a mail order gun-smith business, be a taxidermist, be a vocalist in a men’s quartet, sell bait in a bait shop, spend one year as a clergyman, and to breed and show Appaloosa horses. Coldsmith has taught at Emporia State University and he had been married to Edna for many years. Together they have raised five daughters.
During his years as a medical doctor, Don spent a lot of time writing books and articles for magazines and newspapers on the back of order sheets while waiting for babies to be born. It was this method that he used to write the first of the books in the Spanish Bit Saga of Western literature that has made his name world famous. This series is based on the moment in history that the horse was introduced to the Plains Indians.
In his lifetime Coldsmith has written twenty nine books in the Spanish Bit Saga, and at least twenty other books including historical novels and non-fiction. He has also written magazine columns, and continues writing to this day. Don believes in doing extensive research on his books to make them historically accurate.
Don Coldsmith died on June 25, 2009, after suffering a stroke. He was 83.

First James Bond books are pretty good. They read fast, so maybe 3 books.

I’ve read this book 3 times and have given it as a gift multiple times. True story about a young man and his experience of living in the Idaho backcountry, there’s a lot more to the story but I don’t want to ruin any of it.
