I have never had to use small base dies in probably a dozen 99's.
Shew me thy ways, O LORD: teach me thy paths. "there are few better cartridges on Earth than the 7 x 57mm Mauser" "the .30 Springfield is light, accurate, penetrating, and has surprising stopping power"

As others have mentioned, I have heard that the published load data for the 300 Savage is very mild in part by all of the model 99s floating around. So, nothing wrong with working up to published data.
I am certainly not an expert on loading for the model 99, but here is what worked in one I Ioaded for last year. Hornaday brass. Both loads shot right at 1.0" groups.
42.0g Varget, 150 SST, 2.600", 2,600 FPS 39.0g H4895, 165 BTPS, 2.610", 2,400 FPS (estimated)

bonepoint: is the 150SST the one that Hornady makes specifically for the 300 Savage? If so, have you tried it on bambi yet?

No, I have not put any into flesh yet. From what I gathered, they are shorter and softer than the regular 150 SST, and seem to work well on deer sized game at 300 Savage speeds.

Not a 99 but,,,,my wife has taken a pile of moose and brown bear with her 300 , Savage. it's a Rem 722 shooting a 165gr NP @ 2450fps,, about what a 99 would produce! I have a Crown Royal bag full of her bullets on the offside.
I tend to use more than enough gun
