You grow those or go out and get them growing wild?

Nope, flushing all the way, for me.
Pointing dogs are nice for open country birds like chukar and quail, but for tall brush, cattails and timber I like a dog that will flush them for me as I try to stay up on the banks and higher ground, so I can actually see when the bird flushes. Nothing is more frustrating to me than having to go into cattails over your head to flush a pheasant that is being pointed.
That, and a fair portion of the time the birds flush anyhow when the pointing dog gets close enough to actually point them, so they're pretty much just a flushing dog anyhow when that happens. A good flushing dog that has it figured out can often get in front of running birds and get them to run or flush back towards you.

Both have their place but I prefer flushers and even at times in certain situations, I prefer no dog at all.

Jealous, trout is at its best when it’s that kind of fresh.

Breeding helps in the stamina department for sure. Not sure about trainability. We're dog folks of the " most any dog is trainable" ilk. Yes, there's the odd dumbbell, box of rocks upstairs dogs, but for the most part we can work with about anything. I especially love mutts!

But yes, breeding matters for specialty things.

Ribbons from three different dogs on this wall, most are from performance events like Obedience, Rally, Agility and Coursing. Mostly my wife's doing. That's from a few years back (2014?) so there are more now shocked

Whippets are not known for being bidable, like a lab or herding breed. But, as evidenced by the above they can be trained. The ribbons are from two whippets and my lovely Valentine. Valentine at the head of the line, then Katie who is still with us, and then Jasmine my wife's first whippet.

Jasmine, who could have done well in the show ring, but hated it and so did my wife. Backstabbing sunsabishes in that doggie crowd I tell you! She ended up with multiple titles in performance events. Sorry for the picture of a picture but I don't know where the disc is with the developed photo from a point and shoot 35mm camera!

I need an older guy down the road like that.

My older guy trades me sausage for eggs from my hens, so I'm not complaining too much!

One of many reasons I don't do anything outside of work with clubs, groups or organizations, or get involved in any kind of formal competition.

I just have no desire to deal or hang out with people beyond a very few friends, and all of you dicks, of course.

Why'd you take the little guy? grin

My buddy, long time hunter, successful many times, family is the one that has told me about Shasta for smallies, once told me to shoot the first legal bull I saw. Of course, that jinxed me that hunt as all I saw was.............................cows!

That one on the ground there looks tasty, even with his clothes on.

A question if I may, the fish, birds even, I understand, but all that big game? What the heck do you do with all that meat? You're just one guy, right?

Not sure about those giant ones, but smaller species are delicious.

I am a carnivorous god, and a generous one at that.

I give my mommy and sisters a lot of it, and have been known to donate a lot to local F&G agencies who often have some sort of a program to donate it to local food kitchens.

I just like to shoot things OK?

Damn nice buck!!!

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
