I have a metal barrel mounted on wheels....has a shoot in back to empty corn into bags/bucket. Barrel was used by my father and uncle years ago when they picked corn and wheat with a combine. Anyone have any experience with storing you deer corn like this? Have a lid on top keep water out, squirrels, mice, etc. Will be stored under a shelter. First time using it and will probably store like 20-30 bags for hunting season.

How big is this barrel? A standard 55 gallon barrel will hold about 8 bags.
What you have should work fine. The only issue is how long you plan to store corn in it. If longer than 2-3 months, you'll need to be concerned with weevils. Typically, adding a little Sevin dust to it when you fill it will solve the problem for longer term storage.

gsganzer, barrel will hold probably 50-75 bags.....it is I think a 500 gallon mounted on a frame on wheels...slanted so can get corn out of shoot at back. I know guys put corn in the corn feeders and some of them hold 300 pounds and corn will last several weeks. I want to start feeding end of Sept on into Dec.

If sealed, one wants to be sure his contents are dry. Mold and aflatoxin are being discussed in another thread here.

If this thing is road worthy and you can get it to your local feed mill, they'll probably work a deal with you for a blended feed product. We used to get corn and roasted soy beans, corn and protein pellet blend or corn and cottonseed. Corn by itself is mainly starch and is better as an attractant. Something with more protein is probably what you want and you should start feeding when antlers begin growing, or when the local browse begins to run out (for us in Central TX, usually late May, June or early July depending on the spring rains). The corn and roasted soybean are pretty water resistant (unlike most protein pellets) so you get less waste if the ground is wet. The turkeys also seem to like the soybeans.

Feeding deer and turkeys is not a good idea it concentrates them....In the wild a deer or turkey might not ever encounter another sick deer or turkey.
Some state Game and Fish Commisions are wising up and banning wildlife feeding.
Use your head and stop feeding.
Before you Texas boys jump me I realize that you guys have to feed them or they'd starve to death.

If you are going to be filling it this corn harvest, regularly pulling some out of it, and have it empty by early next year you should be fine as long as it is not excessively wet going into your trailer. Bugs should not be an issue until the weather warms up next spring, I would not recommend holding corn over in the trailer until next year or it will definitely be full of weevil if left untreated. As long as it doesn’t sit for a long period of time without getting some pulled out of it you should not have to worry about mold forming on top, especially if you drive it after it is filled to level out the peak on top. If the corn goes in on a really hot day, it may not be a bad idea to open the lid on top and let some of the hot air out after the weather cools down.

Not corn but I use soy beans here in Louisiana. I have 12 - 30 gallon black plastic drums with cam lock tops. I have some bean that are almost 2 years old left in 1 drum and they look and smell just like the day they were placed in the drums. I have a 30x60 insulated shop (no ac), so its not in direct sunlight or cold temps. No moisture can get in them either.

Have you looked at articles about feeding corn to deer.Especially introducing it in short time periods There are better feeds available. https://www.ckwri.tamuk.edu/sites/default/files/pdf-attachment/2016-05/january_2013.pdf

Bluboy Basically what you built was sort of a gravity wagon(which is what I use) My gravity wagon holds 100 bu.. Floor is slanted toward the sliding door. Can be pulled on the highway. I put turn signals on mine.

Metal barrels sweat. Use plastic. Buy livestock feed quality by the bag. Store it at the feed & seed until time to go to fill a feeder.
I shoot deer off feeders here at home. There is no reason for deer to be on this property other than to visit a feeder. It's not really hunting, but it does fill the freezer and means fewer deer on the roads we drive most.

Depending on where your at, with that much corn if it gets freezing at night and warm during the day it could get condensation then mold or sour.
