"The foundation began its efforts in fall 2019 with the creation of the Gender Diversity Committee. Initially, the goal of the committee was to conduct research, find examples and create an internal guidebook for interpreters in order to better answer visitors’ questions.

According to Tolson, who met with two co-workers that fall on the matter, it became an increasingly growing demand as several visitors had asked questions about the lives of LGBTQ people in the 17th and 18th centuries.People ask. If they’re interested and want to know, we need to have an answer for it,” Tolson said.

So, they met and pitched the idea of forming a committee to the foundation’s Vice President of Education, Research and Historical Interpretation Beth Kelly. According to Kelly, it was a decision that fell in line with the foundation’s goal of providing knowledge and telling a complete story of all of those living in the colonial period.

“We’re very open to making sure that we look for all of the people that were here in the 18th century; those that were in the margins and those whose voices were not able to be recorded or not able to be voiced and bring them forward,” Kelly said.

And, with more history coming to light, Kelly said the foundation plans to introduce programs and reenactments geared toward educating the public on LGBTQ history in the colonies.
