Hundreds of thousands have protested the health pass the last few weeks. The French seem to love their protests, from the farmers blocking the highways to all the gilet jaune protestors. Pardon my ignorance of the politics there. Does any of it make a difference? Is it just a national past time after which they all just submit and comply and life goes on? Or has anything come of it more recently than the late 18th century?

Pretty sure that the one where they enthusiastically utilised the guillotine was very effective.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

And the toe-rag in charge there at the moment would do well to remember.

1- yes, the French enjoy protesting. It is a national sport.
2. They aren’t considered serious until the Unions go on strike. When one Union goes on rstrike, they ALL go on strike
3. After about 2 -6 weeks of a strike with no public transportation etc, something gets negotiated and the strikes and protests end.
4. Have they been effective? From time to time they have. Look up May 68. Protests nearly brought the government
Look up 1995 French strikes (which I witnessed)and the 2019 pension strike

In short, yes, in a parliamentary democracy, such popular protests have a significant influence on policy.
IOur bi-cameral system and electoral college are both designed to slow down such "mob rule". Which does insulate politicians from protests, which is good and bad.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.
Democrats would burn this country to the ground, if they could rule over the ashes.

I don't pay much attention to protesting French until the guillotines come out.

In short, yes, in a parliamentary democracy, such popular protests have a significant influence on policy. Then how come Canada and Britain don't have protests like the French? The Canadian and British government structures are different from the French, and are essentially two party systems like ours. The French, like most continental countries are multi-party systems with direct, proportional elections. The English and Canadian systems are more like ours, and are de-facto two party systems. This allows voters a sense of access to their representatives, real or imagined, that is missing in a proportional, national, voting scheme.

Only Marxist, anti freedom protests work.
Progressives are the most open minded, tolerant, and inclusive people on the planet, as long as you agree with everything they say, and do exactly as you're told.
