It seems like every couple of years we have a chukar hunter who turns up missing, only to be found in the bottom of a canyon. Many times, with their dogs remains as well.

This is not the exact spot, but these are mountains in the area and representative of what type of terrain he was likely in.

My father found a bloke in the bush once, who had been knocked. The cops put the old man through the hoops over several hours, until they decided that he was probably not their suspect.

Its beautiful during the summer. Its one of the coldest places around in the winter. Just down the road, is Stanley and Custer County which often has the coldest temps in the lower 48. I have hunted when the wind chill puts it at 40 below and regular temps of -20 are typical. It is hard country, and mistakes can quickly become fatal mistakes.

No place I would rather hang out though.

Nice country, but unforgiving:

A couple of my friends found a dead guy while they were Elk hunting near Gardiner MT. I guess he had been dead for a few years. They didn't want to stop hunting, but decided to dig the guys wallet out of his pocket with his identification. When they got back to Gardiner they had to turn around and lead the authorities back to the body.
I asked one of the guys several years later if they were tempted to check for money etc. He said there was a Weatherby 300 Wby rifle leaning against a tree.
Hell, they wouldn't even take any reward money from the guy's family. They even led the man's family to where he died !

Yeah, he has my respect though of course I never knew him. Those days it was stick bows or recurves and Bear Razorheads. And he went after goats. Confident man he was.
