Got a new bergara 6.5PRC! Should I use a Barnes 130TSX or Hornady 143eldx for elk hunting?

Ttsx or LRX are my go to on 6.5, 270, 06

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

In my 6.5 PRC I use 127 Barnes LRX. Shoots great in my rifle.
I've loaded other bullets for this rifle, the Barnes check off most of the boxes for me when I use it.

I've killed two bulls with the 143 ELD-X, and witnessed another killed with one in the PRC. That'd be my choice.

When it comes to elk hunting, Barnes bullets are the only thing I use, and have done so successfully for a long time.

A 6.5 PRC probably wouldn’t be my choice for elk on the thick timber where I want them down now but on more open terrain I have no qualms using my 6.5 saum and a quality 135-156 bullet on elk. Same for the 6:5 prc

I guess I think about it like this, if I’d use a 270 with the same weight bullet I’d use about anything 264 at the same or more speed. The 270 hasn’t let me down and I can’t imagine the 264 or PRC would either.

I killed 2 bull elk in 2019 with a 6.5 GAP 4S shooting 156 Berger's at 2850 fps, it knocked the stuffing out of them! Distances wasn't far (250 and 150 yards). I'd have no issues shooting to 500 yards with this rifle.

4 cow elk now with the 143 ELD-X. Turned to them when Partitions and AccuBonds became unobtainium.

3 using the CM, 1 using a PRC. All elk were 400lb and up. Real easy to work up an accurate load, or hell, just use the Precision Hunter factory ammo.

I just placed them tight in the leg crease. Regrettably, I've yet to get a recovered bullet - all exits - farthest shot was 467 yards lazed using the PRC.

It's you and the bullet, and all the rest is secondary.

Dec 2021 I shot a cow late season with the PRC using the 143X. Just under 300 yards. I would of used a mono if I could of found one. But it is an accurate bullet in my Cooper.

Either is fine actually but I would gravitate towards the lrx to ttsx or Hammer bullet

I have 20 some dead elk with 140 class match bullets. Every one was just like this.

Nope.
Check at 13 to 14 second mark, as you can watch trace and see the impact point

My daughter used the 143gr eld-x from her PRC on last falls spike bull. One shot 220yds broke both shoulders and took out the lungs. Done deal in about 10 seconds.

Well made monolithic bullets excel at heavy, thick skinned animals. Push them as fast as they will go. Hammer bullets are the best there is right now.

That was my first thought as well, but that bull doesn't seem to me to be a complete broadside shot.
Look and see the position off the far front leg.
Not a bad shot at all, IF, that is where they were aiming...
Stayed away from big bones, and still lethal...We don't know this for certain because there was a second shot.
Only a autopsy, bullet path, etc... would give the full story.

Anyone know the distance of the shot? If it was mentioned, I missed it. Agree the first shot was back a bit, but body language of the bull, to me anyway, said he was mortally wounded. Classic looking around, slow turn, not as panicked as the others. But the hunter absolutely did everything right, especially a fine follow up shot. If it doesn’t fall immediately, anchor the animal to the ground before you contemplate whether the first one was enough. The follow ups seem to most times be more difficult because of animal movement, hunter excitement, etc. Mighty fine bull! Just my humble opinions, FWIW.

Sportsman's Warehouse commissioned Barnes Bullets to make a special, run of 6.5 PRC Vor-Tx ammo. It's pushing a 130 gr TSX BT to 3010 fps from a 24" barrel. It uses Lapua brass. No blue tip. It's the non-tipped TSX bullet.

Wonder why they didn't use a LRX?

Sure if you can find ammo for it...

around here you can't find ANY Ammo for a PRC, of any type..
and I've heard guys complaining that they can't find ammo even on line...

a number of places sure have enough available for purchase on the store racks.. but they aren't moving..

nothing to feed them and evidently you can't even find brass for them...

top 5 cartridge around here seem to be 243, 270, 308, 30/06 and 30/30....

The 127LRX delivered via 6.5 -06 performed well on my largest bull. Have switched to my 30-06 w/ 200 partitions lately as my current spot offers more close up opportunities than far.
