I always use Amdro. It's a bait product, so like others have said it has a shelf life.
Interesting thing I've observed about fire ants. One year I had a scorched earth policy towards them and killed every single mound in my yard. That year, we ended up having an explosion of ticks at my place. Since then, I've left a few mounds around, if they're in places that won't bother us. I'm guessing that fire ants might help keep the ticks in check. Sort of that balancing the ecosystem thing.

Yep, and it works better to spray on wet/damp ground. Amdro just makes them fat. And it cost much more to cover the whole yard. (maybe the date was out on the crap when I tried it?) I have a boom on an old Kawasaki mule. Still have to spray at least twice a year for the hateful little fuggers.

Diesel tractor with a drippy fuel return line. Park it over the mound at idle for an hour.

Amdro and some orthro powder. I sprinkled it around the mound. It seems they moved back and forth.

D.E. - Diatomaceous Earth
Get it at the pool store. A 50 lb bag will treat your entire yard with a spreader. Best Ive ever used. It is ground up sea shells and Oyster shells.

Sprinkle one tablespoon of ORTHENE FIRE ANT KILLER on a fire ant mound during the day and it will kill the whole mound overnight.. Will this also work on the big red ants?

When I lived in Georgia, fire ants were a problem in the yard, most of the chemicals did not genuinely eradicate the mounds,,,,,,,,,,, they would move a few feet...
I found two things that WORKED!
Fire up the propane cooker, put the large pot on and boil the water, pour the whole pot down the center of the mound....... you will be surprised how fast it can suck up the water, faster is better.........
I don't think I ever had to do a mound twice.....
There may be a few workers left after this treatment and they will spend the next day or so hauling out boiled ant bodies, after that they are gone...............
The other thing that did work was mixing up a half gallon of a strong malathion mixture and pouring it down the center of the mound..................... The boiling water is more ecologically sound, but then I wasn't trying to clear 5 acres either....
YMMV

Kills just about everything, so it should take care of any variety of ant. It is hands-down the most consistent fire ant killer we've used. I've also used it on bumblebee nests. The only downside is that is reeks of rotten cabbage, and the smell carries quite a distance.

Andro works well. Only thing is that it has corn as an ingredient, so my dog with a cast iron stomach, goes around the yard and eats it. It won’t hurt mammals, but he is wasting my ant killer.

Which one. I am out of the stuff I used and don't remember the name. Bought some "ant killer" that supposed to work on fire ants but it sucks.
Looking at AMDRO Fire Ant Bait Granules. Reviews look good AMDRO works on fire ants. Use it!

I once had a jar of “Dave’s Insanity Hot Sauce.” Too freakin hot to even enjoy. I boiled a large stewer of water and blended in entire pint of it. Poured it on mound. Dead. Nearly immediately. No bs. Don’t know if it was 212 water or capsicum. Hilarious.

Ordered stuff with ACEPHATE. Great reviews. Thanks all! Tried it yesterday afternoon. It was the bomb. Nothing moving this morning. It even rained last night. 1-2 teaspoons per mound.

When I lived in SW Georgia an old timer told me this... (we had a big field with lots of mounds),
"Dig a big shovel full of the first mound and put it in a bucket...
Then go to the second mound and take a big shovel full and fill the first mound... then 3rd to second... and so on and so forth. The bucket full goes in last mound you dig.
Fire ants HATE fire ants from different colonies... they will kill each outer."
Kinda make me think of Chicago, Compton or Hialeah.
If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.
