Anyone got an idea at about what serial number did they stop putting the caliber in the barrel address on the 1899's? I searched thru my rifles ,and the last one i had with the caliber in the address was in the 39,xxx serial range. A saddle ring carbine in 30-30, and stating caliber 30 in the barrel address.Don

I’m not sure you’ll find a sharp cutoff, seems like everything from that time was a gradual change as spare parts were used.
39,xxx is almost exactly when the 25-35, 32-40 and 38-55 came out, so I’ll bet that’s right in the ballpark for the end of the caliber stamping in the barrel address.
Be interesting to see if Rick has data on these.

Notes I have:
1899B 36.6xx has CAL .303 at end of barrel address; not stamp at top rear near receiver 1899F 37.8xx had "CAL 30" in the barrel address and "30-30" over barrel. 1899B 38.5xx has SAV 303 on top barrel near receiver; no view of barrel address 1899B 38.8xx does not have the caliber in the barrel address; no view of top rear of barrel to tell if stamped there 1899C 39.xxx CAL .303 in the address AND SAV 303 on top rear of barrel
and then my odd one 69.871 1899B 30" has the CAL 30 at end of the barrel address AND "30-30" on top rear. My guess is it was special order and the 30" barrel came out of the bin and also then stamped 30-30 on top rear. I need to letter this one.

I thought the Sav30 was a 30-30?

Joe, It is ,thats why i was wondering about keiths rifle with 303 in the address and 30-30 on the barrel. Looks like savage might have changed the barrel address around s/n 40,000 or so. Don

Typo? Or didn’t matter because the 303 and 30 are the same caliber?

Don, et al, typo. left a 3 off ... SAV 303. Edited it with fix. Note: not all my rifles, just pics/data notes I have accumulated. Only one in the list that I have is the 30" B.
