I spend my winters in Green Valley, AZ, riding ATV's in the desert with a group of about 10 other old farts. We ride various areas of the border between Yuma and Sierra Vista on a regular basis, and we also spend a great deal of time riding in wilderness areas far from the border, including overnight camping trips.

We carry spare gas, comprehensive first aid kits, maps-compass-GPS, tools, tire repair kits, tire pumps, tow straps, jumper cables and lots of water.

We have some Canadians with us that don't carry firearms, but the rest of us do. Each guy carries a handgun. 3 of us are retired cops. I carry a Glock 17 9mm with an extra magazine and also a S&W 642 .38 in my pocket, along with spare ammo for both. If we are going to be within 20 miles of the border, 3 of us will have AR-15's in our rigs.

We never look for trouble and stay away from the border at night.

Been maybe 25 years or more ago , green to the western sky’s and didn’t understand the difference in air clarity compared to the east .
Caused a serious misjudgment in distance we intended to hike to lake Powell , we were 15-20 miles west of Page , guessing , don’t really remember for sure the distance .
Was staying at some condominiums a little off the hiway waiting on a motor replacement at a shop there .
Got bored and decided to hike to the lake .
I was packing a G-21 and she was packing a colt nickle diamondback in 38 spcl.
We started walking with two twelve pack coolers of drinks and food on ice , couple of fishing poles , and two dogs .
We got real close to getting our azz handed to us in the heat .
Hiked back in the dark , was an experience.

Water can be pretty important and a way to start fire.

What Kent said above

When I hike, I always have a pack. Has water, food, knife, tweezers (nice to have when you get into a cactus), mirror, etc.

But I very very rarely pack a weapon for protection.
