Why would they wander off where no one could find them if they were so close to their home? Two boomers step off the pavement. Get lost. Die. Many such cases! They live/lived in the sticks. I'd love to see your version of "The Sticks." LOL

How big, acreage wise is the Pine Barrens roughly? I went to trade school with a guy from NJ who was always talking about it like it’s some uncharted wilderness. My map shows the whole damn state of NJ being slightly larger than the county I live in, which sorta scratches the vast wilderness theory unless there’s some hellacious terrain I didn’t notice last time I passed by. It said 1 million acres. Which sounds huge, but is roughly the same as 40 miles by 40 miles (1600 sq miles). It's large.. but if you've been out west, it's not that impressive. Could definitely get lost in 1600 square miles if you get turned around on an overcast day and head in deeper. Uh-huh. LOL What a buncha fugking idiots.

Tom Brown's book, The Tracker has some pretty vivid descriptions of the Pine Barrens. Not a place I would like to be without my OnX. Friend's grandfather had about a 50 acre farm there, we hunted quail and rabbits. Flat as can be, there were not many houses .

Its pretty big area, bigger than the actual park too, including private property thats contiguous. http://www.newjerseyscenic.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/nj_pinebarrens_map.gifIts a little bit larger than whats shown in the map. Its not some vast impenetrable swamp that will eat all comers alive. The real issue is that its painfully featureless therefore easy to get turned around. Of course a compass will solve that. Factor in that you are talking NJ, which is small and isnt particularly crawling with veteran explorers, and it can be a bit troublesome at times. Vast in comparison to out west, or even PA, it is not though. Actually quite beautiful, a unique ecosystem in the North east. I would wager a guess that exposure is a bigger concern. Just walk east and eventually you will hit the Parkway.
Quit giving in inch by inch then looking back to lament the mile behind ya and wonder how to preserve those few feet left in front of ya. They'll never stop until they're stopped. That's a fact.

Good one deflave. I saw that show. What is weird, last we saw the guy they were supposed to murder was running off into the pine barrens with a couple of bullets in him. we never saw what happened to him.
The mysterious pine barrens. He climbed up a tree supposedly where his track ended and Paulie and Chrissy were too stupid to look up....The "interior decorator" outsmarted them.

Like you mentioned flat, thick with pines kind of hard to get bearings. Funny to see the sopranos episode Can’t see someone dying in there unless they were dressed liked Pauli in a snow storm

We had a project in there where we had to traverse through the pines collecting a bunch of soil samples. Had a woman on the field crew from Idaho. She lasted one day and had to leave, couldn't deal with the closeness of the pines and got claustrophobic.
