Very Nice Bull. I shoot almost the same recipe in .300 WSM except I shoot the Barnes LRX bullet.
I shot a good bull (350”) couple years ago and had me scratching my head too. 1 st shot broadside at 250 yds. Hit him in the lungs. My wife was with me spotting and said she could hear the lungs sucking.
Bull stood there and never flinched and started to walk away but now quartering toward me. I put 2 rounds into him between his neck and shoulder in the crease. Later found the shots were 1 “ apart. Then he started climbing up hill and I shot him in the spine between his hind quarters and broke him down. All shots hit where I aimed. Opened him up and it was a flood of blood and goo. He was going to die after the first shot but he just would not go down and I did not want him to get over the ridge because he fell in a spot where I could get my side by side up to him. Has had me questioning my bullet choice ever since.

Lacy1,

I would not question your bullet choice. Some animals just don't know they are dead.

The bullet looks real close the 130gr ttsx bullet that I recovered from a cow elk I shot. Stuck just under the hide on the off side.

Great bull Mike! Elk bulls are just awesome and so majestic. Just curious…have you weighed the bullet to see what the weight retention was? I swear by Barnes X bullets and would be curious to see what your bullet weighs after it’s adventure through the elk. I shot a huge doe here in PA many years ago with my pet Ruger .280 Rem load with a 140 grain Barnes X bullet at 97 yards, frontal chest shot, and recovered the bullet while cleaning a rump roast in the sink. Washed it, carefully picked the meat out of it’s beautifully expanded petals, and dried it for a few months. When I weighed it months later it showed 139.6. Still have that bullet! I haven’t recovered any since then, but still use them exclusively in my deer and elk rifles.

Sorry to hi-jack your post a bit, but when I saw the bullet, it made me smile, but not as much as the bull did. Congrats on a great bull!

Mike,
Thanks for confirmation! Hard to beat that kind of weight retention, while still getting superb accuracy and excellent terminal performance! When I shot my biggest bull back in 2013, it was 426 yards with my 7 STW Ruger #1, with a Barnes 140 grain TSX bullet…he humped up hard, stood still just long enough for me to plop the empty out and stuff another in, and fell in his tracks before I could aim again. Field dressing revealed he had a broken heart. Love them Barnes! Awesome bull!

How did you like your hunt overall? My daughter has a chance to go with them if she draws a permit this year.
