I really like the 300 Savage cartridge, particularly in a rifle where it can show its stuff with modern loads and bullets. An interesting load I use in my 700 Classic which would almost certainly do well in your rifle is a Berger 168 VLD on top of H4895 for about 2550 fps. 41 grains +/- will do it. The little 300 with its minimal taper and 30 degree shoulder looks pretty racy with a long VLD hanging out of it. You would have no restrictions on overall length to interfere with tuning in the VLD either.

Thanks for the tip mathman. I also have the 700 classic in the Savage. My smith thought I was nuts doing this in the 300 Savage but I like the classics and it's been taking deer, bear ect for over 100 years so whats not to like.

Thanks to all for the positive comments on this one. It will definitely be in the deer woods this fall. I like nice wood and the thing about wood is there's nothing that can hurt it that sandpaper can't fix....almost. Pete53 I have a Weatherby Ultra Light in 257 Wby, it's my go to gun for hunting out west. i have 2 custom Ruger # 1's 257 Weatherby mags. 1 Custom pre 64 Win. model 70 257 Weatherby mag., 1 Weatherby Accumark 257 Weatherby mag , and just built a 257 Weatherby mark 5 with a 71/2 twist 28 in Brux barrel to shoot Hammer 128 gr bullets out west. so you know a great cartridge too. " my son Sunday Minnesota deer opener weekend shot a huge whitetail buck that dressed 225 lbs. with his or my Ruger #1 257 Weatherby. this buck is impressive P.M. me with your cell number and i can send you a picture.

back to custom Ruger # 1`s i have been thinking about a 256 Newton in a #1 ? but maybe a 6.5 x 284 with a 7 twist barrel would be better ?

I give you some new brass if I could shoot that gun. But you have to bring it to Idaho, and not mind the drool on that beauty. Color if you like but she is beautiful as is. Jeff

Absolutely beautiful!! I would be happy with as it is now. Would be hard to improve on it really, would just make it more of a museum piece than a hunting rifle.

How is the forearm attached? Looks like a lug attached to the barrel. Asking because I have a project #1. The smith does indeed attach a lug to the barrel. It's more forward than the factory lug.

That is a stunner!
Curious though about the transition from octagon to round on the barrel. Looks like a recessed, contoured ring machined into the barrel?
Is that purely aesthetic or does it serve a purpose?
She a BEAUT! Congrats.

Jeff Line me up a deer hunt and I'll bring it. I might be able to do that in Wyoming or Eastern Oregon, I am new to Idaho so may take me a bit to line up a good place worthy of that rifle. If you do need some brass I have so e to spare. Just pm me. It may take a bit for me to find it as my loading supplies are in storage Jeff

Beautiful rifle ! Since you have two that are case hardened I would have this one lightly engraved and maybe a deer and or a pronghorn engraved with a silver coin finish.

I.ve seen 6 bucks so far and none have been legal. I need 4 points on one side to be a legal beck. I couldn't take it any longer and punched a big doe with her. She went on a fifty yard death run.
