I am looking for a bolt action 22LR for squirrel hunting and target shooting. I would really like stainless but willing to buy blued as there are more options. I am looking at the Bergara BMR, Tikka T1x, Bergara B14R, Savage Mark ll. What have you chosen and why? None of them but my personal bias is hating rifles with the magazine hanging below the stock. All will certainly be accurate enough for squirrels but in that price range go take a look at gunkbroker or guns international for a nice used CZ 452 or 455. You won't be disappointed. Pugs, I don't like a magazine hanging below the stock either but I don't know of many bolt actions that have a flush fitting magazine. The only one that I can think of is the Ruger 77/22 and Ruger American. I am not limiting the discussion to the ones that I listed in my opening post. I am open to others that you have chosen and why you chose them. buy a aftermarket magazine for the tikka t1x or buy the dip magazine plate, that will fix your problem, but reduces your capacity from 10 to 5 and 6 shot

I think the Ruger American Rimfire is a good, reasonably priced option. I have one, and have shot several squirrels with it. Great trigger pull, and accurate.

I'd like to handle one of those, Nebraska. Come on out! Thanks for the invite! If my wanderings ever take me your direction I'll hit you up.

If you prefer wood and steel bottom metal over plastic the CZ will be tough to beat.
I can't stand those tactical oversize external mag wells that are completely unnecessary.
They remind me of a hanging booger...Tom

+1 I had one in 22WMR and thought it was great. And how do you beat the flush fitting 10 round rotary magazine?

The Anschutz mag baseplate is low enough and rounded, while not a "flush fit" I consider it acceptable. Since that the balance point and where my hand goes when afield. Proly shoulda kept my 141 My 184 was too light. I don't find the CZ455 mag protrusion to be a big deal. Not my fave, but also not a deal breaker.

Just spent the last hour messin w my CZ 455. Bought new, proly 300 rounds through it ( range ).
The safety was stiff and noisy in the woods. So i hit it w a stone and then lubed some spots and worked the bolt proly 500 times, safety maybe 200.
On the range the safety hardly got used. Showed the need for improvement afield.
Its better now, id say 50% improved. Will slick it up a bit more.
If mine is like others, theyre kinda rough. Be OK after 2 bricks proly, or some polishing up front.

The Bergaras and the Tikka would be my choices of the ones you listed, but I wouldn't overlook CZ either.

What is your budget? It would surely be helpful in narrowing down the field of recommendations.... $1000. or under. That opens up a lot of possibilities... For around that money you could get a Kimber 82, Winchester 52 Repro sporter, a Winchester 75 sporter and a scope, a Lithgow 101A, Steyr Zephyr II, and many more quality bolt action .22 sporter rifles...

Marlin 981TS if stainless is important.
Some sort of Anschutz if blued CM works.
Winchester 320s are nice too.
I like the 17HM2 for shooting squirrels, but access to quality rifles and ammo can be a challenge.

I find the looks of Ruger 77/22 more pleasing than the shrouded bolt and safety sections on many of the higher end .22's. To me the Ruger looks Mauser 98 or pre-64 m70 like and others remind me of a Japanese Arisaka 38 or 99. Personal bias because my 77/22 and 77 Mk ll look alike.
My other auto is a .45

Neighbor's Tika is quite accurate, and my new 457CZ does very well too. Both are ammo specific though.
