Nice job. What stock is your rifle wearing? That is a Brown Precision. The rifle was built by Ken Gennecco of Stockton Ca for me in 1985 when there weren't a lot of options for lightweight hunting rifles. It weighed 7lbs 2oz with sling and 2-7 Leupold Compact when it was built. With the 2.5-8 and several coats of paint it has, like me, put on a few oz since then. Methinks you are a sandbagger. I’d hardly call that a plain Jane rig. With that stock and scope, I’d call it an ideal all arounder! The fact that you hit a few inches farther back than intended seems fortunate and saved you a few pounds of burger. Nice job. The only flaw I see is on your target photo. You didn’t even hit the bullseye!😁

Thanks for all the good info on the Barnes. And the 2 shot group was shot at 200 yds according to the info written down on your target. Outstanding!

Congrats on the elk hunt. You must have been in Chama the week after my daughter and I. We filled our tags and left the day the snow started. We also went “old school” with a Winchester 30-06 and a FN Mauser 7x57. Both still work remarkably well.

Congratulations, most excellent! The 700's bolt handle didn't break off and the Leupold scope allowed you to make a killing shot and with the old outdated .30'06.....unbelievable.

After many years with a 270 and then a 300 WSM, my last 3 elk have been with a 30-06.

Superb!
The ole' 30-06 (like the 308), is as low-drama as it gets.

Wonderful! Can’t beat the 30-Gov’t-06 for much of anything. Enjoy those burgers & backstraps!
Low drama sounds pretty good these days.
Merry Christmas all.

Congratulations! Nice work.
I have a plain Jane, Ruger 77, same scope, same cartridge, same bullet. She always seems to get it done without any hassle.

The 30-06 has been getting it done for over a century. Hope to restore my dad's old Model 17 that he used for decades.

Just curious. What does a guided cow elk hunt cost?
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

You mean to tell me that there is actually someone on here that put together an "all around rifle" and has stuck with it for 35+ years?! Can't be...... Couple years back I got a T3X in 30-06 and put a Loopy 2.5-8 on it for the same purpose. Looks to be in good company. Congrats on the elk!
