To expand on David's question, any idea when the 50's steel rotors first started appearing? My EG #597785 has a case hardened steel rotor. 23C LBC.

A number of years ago I had two other EG's with cased rotors, both with 600,000 serial numbers. I hadn't heard of steel rotors in the 500,000 range until this post got started.

Appears a rather random use of case colored 1950 into1954 with some blued steel scattered in. I can't identify a time when all non-brass, caliber or model, was used vs brass. I logged the info if reported but we didn't put an effort into determining when or at what ratio brass was used.

We were too busy collecting serials and LBC to worry about internal parts. Actually, we didn't know enough about the 50's rifle to know what to collect.

1950R in 250 brass. 1951R in 300 case.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

My questions about R's and 250-3000's having steel rotors was answered in the affirmative. WITH SAVAGE NEVER SAY NEVER.

Yes, I believe you. grin

Only some 99's made in that range had steel rotors. Many still had brass. They used them both, it was apparently never a "stop making brass rotors and use only steel".

In 1961 I would think aluminum.

Put a magnet on it to test.
