My buddy lost his grass so he had to take his bred cows to Miles City.
Bred cows mind.
He average 670 dollars a head.
They were not butter ball fat....but they were skin and bone either.
670! That’s ridiculous. Shouldn’t it be at least twice that? It was a fugging blood bath. He was assured 1000 a head. What’s it take to open a butcher shop? Sell your own beef and your neighbors?

It’s not like it’s a surprise is it? Should’ve stocked up 3-4 months ago. “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success” – Alexander Graham Bell.

It would be hard to do with any significant numbers.
Sure you could sell a few but not a few hundred.
We sell our calves in a couple weeks, fingers crossed.

We are eating half Brahma beef and whitetail venison. Neither are near as good as corn fed beef but we are good for a year and there is more where that came from.

I put 6 deer in the freezer this season so I haven't bothered looking. Yep LOL... I just got a damage permit for 30. I'm not worried about beef prices much either.

Two freezers full, buying smart. Got 92% ground beef last night for $1.99/lb, a whole ham for 99 cents/lb. Got some center cut pork chops today for $1.49/lb. Buy cheap and stack deep. Use a vacuum sealer.

Anyone else leaving it laying ? Prices are stupid .. Yep, like some packages of steaks up to $60.00, i.e., a serving for two of Filet Mignon. Ridiculous! I was paying $3.98/# last year for whole vac-pac tenderloins. The price now is $8-10 per pound at the same place…..which is actually still a great price but it’s still double the price that it was last year. Getting more independent from grocery stores and relying more on homegrown and local has been our goal. Since our (short) long term plan is to put this state in the rear view mirror and make our permanent residence up north I’m planning the new build with an eye and emphasis on sustainability. Being able to plan, build, plumb and wire properly rather than piecing in later should help with ease and productivity. No longer does one have to do much “penciling” to realize that the initial investment won’t take long to recoup. Not only do you have the benefit of a better and more nutritious vegetable or fruit but it now becomes cheaper than buying some tasteless piece of corporate farmed crap. I doubt I’ll ever raise beef, I’ll just keep supporting the small, local rancher. I don’t see groceries getting cheaper. Food, like everything these days will be used by the government as a weapon.
Politicians are the lowest form of life on earth. Liberal Democrats are the lowest form of politician. General George S. Patton, Jr.
