Could this 16 gauge double, with a 9.3x72R be used with steel shot? All of the areas where I hunt upland birds now require steel shot. I think it would be fun and interesting to use this drilling, and fun to have the 9.3 in case I came across something on four-feet that needed to be shot. https://www.tylergunworks.com/store/J-P-Sauer-&-Sohn-Drilling-9-3-x-72R-p427796756Thanks, Guy

If it has 2 3/4"chambers and the chokes aren't too tight, I see no reason not to. If it's bored full and fuller, as it may well be, you would probably want them opened for upland hunting anyway. If the chambers are 2.5", however, you may have to handload to get shotshells.

I wouldn't shoot steel out of it but it is easy enough to hand bismuth or ITX shot for it . Those barrels are irreplaceable and were designed for lower pressure 2.5"/65mm lead shot shells. That doesn't mean they won't be effective, I load 3/4oz of ITX-10 shot in my 16's and 7/8oz in my 12's. 1oz of BB's in my 16ga/16ga/9.3x72R 7/8oz ITX 6' and 1 oz of Bismuth 5's in my 2.5" 12ga

Thanks guys. Not sure I'm going to buy, though it's quite affordable. Hopefully someone gives it a good home and hunts with it. Erich - very cool drilling & photos!
Regards, Guy

RST makes shotgun shells that would be perfect for this gun. Right now they are out of stock. https://www.rstshells.com/ When they can get the components they have the right length and pressure for this gun.

See this is an older thread. You can get steel shot wads that are very thick to protect the bore, at ballistic products. I’ve used them in quite a few loads. Can get them unslitted so you can cut them as needed. Have used them in Turkey loads for my 16/9.3 hammer drilling and killed a lot of turkeys.

you know the 9.3x72, is going to punish your shoulder No it won’t. The 9.3x72r is a pussycat. My experience has been the 9.3x74r in a light rifle will get your attention, but still isn’t “punishing”.

the 9.3x72R is like a 35 Rem the 9.3x74R is like a 375 H&H Magnum.

If the 9.3x72R kicked a lot, my wife Eileen wouldn't own one--and kill deer with it. She started getting recoil headaches around 15 years ago, but finds her "no name" combination gun works fine.

the 9.3x72R is like a 35 Rem the 9.3x74R is like a 375 H&H Magnum. Well, not quite. I had a 9.3x74R for awhile in a double rifle, a dainty one at that, a model that is now the Chapuis IPHISI. Even the 375R is a step down from the H&H pressure-wise, and this 9.3 is a little step down from that. I found it a very pleasant mid-bore cartridge and easily took a bison heifer with it, running at about 75 yds. Talk about a cartridge in stark contrast to the short ‘n fats.. My thought was that it would be neat to try on elk in the timber, but I didn’t get to that. But to the point, it provides a fairly heavy bullet, say 274 grs. at just under 2400 fps, not to be shunned by any means, but not at all punishing to the shooter. Another gun I would like to have kept.

I do too! But part of the reason Eileen fell for the gun was the details, like this, which you no doubt remember from examining it during your visit:

It isn't heavy and is beautifully balanced. I have to say I covet the gun, and it takes something pretty special to get my socks hot.

Theoldpinecricker,
With the 1-4x 20 Leupold it weighs seven pounds exactly. With the scope detached it weighs six pounds, one ounce.
