Used it as a kid coon hunting carbide lanterns.

I know this if you put in a mason jar with enough weight then add water and screw on the lid and throw it into a lake, it makes one hell of a boom and kills fish.

We put a bunch of it down rat holes along side a railroad track behind a shop to kill the rats. Ole boy wanted to see what it was doing and flicked his lighter while looking down a hole. The ensuing blast torched all his hair, blew him into the air about 20 ft. Ground rumbled for 30 minutes!

When I was a kid we lived in an old house built back around the mid-late 1800s that still had some of the original gas light fixtures mounted on walls. Coal gas was the fuel used back then.
