Just got a 7-08 mtn rifle put together. Took it to the range, and was not real impressed with the results (yet).
Tried some Hornady SST's, and some partitions, both 140's. I was getting 3 shot groups right at 2" at 100. (RL-15)
That barrel really did get hot quick though, and it was pretty windy. What kind of groups are most people getting with such a lightweight tube? Are you shooting 3 shot groups?
I am sure I can get them to tighten up a bit, and if this gun shoots 1-1.5" at 100, I will be happy enough.
Going to buy some Ballistic Tip 140's tonight and give them a whirl.
Just looking for experiences and input on those with the lightweight rigs. I don't want unrealistic expectations.
Thanks.

I'd try it when it ain't pretty windy, is it bedded? To many variables here.
For the record my M7 7mm-08 shots well with 120's, ain't tried anything bigger.

My 7-08 MR shoots 1.5's. I've only shot my .280 MR just a week or so ago and not sure what I have yet. I stupidly shot a half of box of .45's in my Colt Lwt Cmd before I decided to break out the .280 so my hand/finger weren't in the game. Shot 3 sets of 3 with the 4,5 and 7,8 shots being less than MOA but with 2 flyers each set. I wrote those off to my fault. I'll probably go back next week without a pistol.

It is floated, the action is bedded, recrowned, and trigger set to 3.5#.
I have never had stellar results with SST's before, so I am not discouraged yet.
Is your M7 floated? Not sure what is best for a lightweight tube. I have a pencil barrel on my AR, and I built it with a free-Float tube, and it shoots lights out.

I'd try a few more loads/bullets and not in windy conditions. My M7 floated, but wouldn't be surprised if a full lenght bed might not help.
Were they stringing, what did the groups look like?

The groups were totally random, and in the shape of a triangle. I was shooting 3 shot groups. It was windy, but I have shot in worse conditions.
Maybe I should buy some 120's too. I know the barrel is like a 9 twist, so it should fling 140's.

Know alot of people who have floated the barrel only to replace the forend tip. Seems they like the upward pressure. Mine in '06 shoots 3 shots into about .75 with 165 Sierra HPBT and H4350. It's been bedded and had a trigger job but that forend tip is still there.

All of my lighter barrels shoot better with a slight upward pressure on the barrel.
I think that you're going to have to FL bed it with a tad bit of upward pressure to get the groups down. Both of my Ti's and my MTN rifle shoot well under an inch at 100 with handloads.
I can't spell... Deal with it...

I have the exact same gun and found 139 gr. Hornadys with 43.5 of 4064 to be very accurate. Most of the time under an inch.
Here's where I messed up. I crowned it, trigger jobbed it and had the action bedded which took the slender bbl off the pressure point. I started shooting 2" groups and larger with everything. I since have put a pressure point back in and it shoots about .50 with this load.

My sons 7-08 Mtn rifle is another that didn't like the freedom of being floated. This is one of the older walnut/ black forearm tip stocks. Put a pressure point back in and it's a tack driver with 120 Ballistic tips, 120 or 140 TSXs and 140 Accubonds. Likes RL-15 with the 120s, but H4350 for the 140s.

Straight from the box, no modifications, mine shoots Remington 140 Core-Lokt sub MOA and has done it for 17 years.

Crap, looks like I might have to rebuild up the barrel channel if I want it to have pressure.

I had one (LSS Mtn) in 30-06. It was bedded/floated and 1" -1.25" was about the best I could get with the 3 or 4 loads I tried. I could never get used to the rear-biased balance of the gun, so I sold it.
Now with even more aplomb

Crap, looks like I might have to rebuild up the barrel channel if I want it to have pressure. DC223, Not really......almost all the guns that I put a pressure pad under the barrel are bedded with the barrel floated 1st and then the pad is added as a 2nd step. I want it bedded with "neutral" pressure; actually just support w/o much real pressure. Anyway, just make a square box with some thin rolls of clay where you want the pressure pad (about 3/4" from the end of the forearm), fill it with excess of bedding compound and set the action in the stock. Use surgical tubing or large rubber bands to pull the action down into the stock and allow the pad to cure. DO NOT USE STOCK SCREWS AND TIGHTEN THEM AS THIS POINT !!!!! Read on..... Trim out the clay to shape the pad neatly. When you use the action screws to tighten the action into the stock you will now pull the barrel down snuggly against the pad with just the right amount of pressure. If this doesn't do the trick then you can always try full length bedding.....I've rarely see that necessary. MM Also, technique is critical when shooting a light rifle for groups......get a Bull's Bag is the best advice I can give. Here's a link Bull's Bag

NoCAL Thats about the best advice on this thread! Accurate bullet with a proven powder and the forend pressure on the wimpy barrel! MM's advice is good too! MtnHtr

Just looking for experiences and input on those with the lightweight rigs. I don't want unrealistic expectations. I have had four #2 barreled rigs. Here are what they averaged for three shot groups with all loads I tried: .250 AI, Hart #2 - 1.022" .250 AI Douglas #2 - .933" .250 AI Douglas #2 - 1.293" 25-284 Douglas #2 - .959" John
